Durham County, North Carolina, officials said Tuesday they arrested a woman in connection with the vandalism and toppling of a Confederate statue in North Carolina. A 22-year-old woman was charged with participation in a riot with property damaging exceeding $1,500 and inciting others to riot, which are both felonies, Durham County Sheriff Mike Andrews said. She was also charged with two misdemeanors of damage to property and disorderly conduct by injury to a statue, CNN reported. http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/ct-north-carolina-statue-removal-20170815-story.html
I don't think there is going to be much controversy here. They broke the law and should be prosecuted.
I may be cynical, but I think the intent was to suggest equivalence between white nationalists/KKK/neo nazis that support Trump violently rioting and killing people with "antifa" protesters tearing down civil war statues.
Law is the law. Nothing wrong here. Why on earth are people digging up graves of Confederate soldiers? Do they really have nothing to do these days?
I don't think so. Clearly, she felt persecuted and should have the right to be angry and vent that on a statue that symbolize a time where slave were lawful. Spoiler I kid I kid
Gotta admit, it was nice not seeing a dissenting opinion in a thread asking if criminals should be prosecuted for crimes. Perhaps there is some hope for this forum after all.
The law is the law, you make an exception for them then all that will do is inspire the other side to find some MLK statue or other civil rights monuments and deface or destroy it...quickly downhill from there.
Sure. We aren't Iraq taking down a statue of Saddam. There is a way to do it right. I also think that there is an opportunity too for these communities to instead of removing these statues, having input from the community about keeping them but putting new monuments next to them for the victims of slavery, and the lynchings. History has to tell their story more than anything. Those Americans have a story to tell us and our children too. Alot of these monuments are used as symbols of glorifying oppression and succeeding from our country which is un-American. If there is a way to tell that story through these monuments in a way that moves us forward and takes away the ability for these monuments to be used as a tool to continue to divide and suppress, I'm all for these communities exploring those options.
No they should be regarded as heroes. Statues are made of uranium and plutonium. Need to come down promptly and whatever manner deemed expedient.
