The thing that impresses me most is the quality of his AB's. He is so calm up there, he doesn't mind waiting for his pitch. I don't have as many years of history watching "top prospects" as some on this board, but honestly, I've never seen anything like it.

Alvarez has been great...but lets pump the breaks on the 10 year contracts.

12 games into his MLB debut in 2016 Tyler White was doing this....

    .395 BA
    4 HR
    .467 OBP
    1.256 OPS

6-7 weeks later he was back in the minors.

No, I'm not saying Alvarez is going to Tyler White it up...but 12 games isn't enough. You need more than 48 ABs to know what you really have.

Come on, now. Tyler White never look like Alvarez. In the Minors or Majors. Yes, White has a good 2 weeks in APRIL 2016.

Based on your comment, I can only assume you have not looked at their minor league stats

His swing is a lot like Tuckers except he can actually hit the ball.

His swing is nothing like Tucker's.

    Tucker has an ugly swing.

It has worked so far in AAA. I'm dubious but I want to see it work in MLB.

Yeah, me too. But it’s ugly though, right?

Flat and slow drag through the zone. I have no idea how he will hit bigboy fastballs while adjusting to breaking balls, so far he looks like a guess hitter to me. I could be very, very wrong, and I hope I am.

His swing is a lot like Berkman from the left side. Balanced, leads with the butt of the bat and bat stays in the zone a long time

Stance is different and Alvarez is a little more compact but swing path and balance is similar. Yordan just looks like a natural hitter, effortless like Berkman

Or dare I say it, a little Griffey Jr.-esque?

Who would you say his swing looks like? I think I’d go Ryan Howard.

Edit: After looking at it more closely idk who I’d go with. Maybe one day we’ll be talking about his swing like everyone does Griffey.

I'm not sure who I would compare Yordan's swing to. Griffey's was one of the purest and smoothest swings of all time. Alvarez has incredible compact raw power.

It is a beautiful swing. Very aesthetically pleasing. It depends on a great initial read of pitch as not much wiggle.

Yeah, my dislike of Tyler White has reached boiling hot lava levels like many others on this BBS...but I distinctly remember White's debut and fawning over him like many are Yordan now. All the accolades of calling Brantley a "Professional Hitter" were ALSO heaped on Tyler White during his rookie season. He just looked so comfortable at the plate and always had such a good approach. It's crazy how much has changed.

I don't really believe Yordan will have a similar fall back to earth, but there is a high likelihood that pitchers figure out some kryptonite for him before the season is through. Then we get to see how well he adjusts.

He actually reminds me of Bonds more than anyone because of how patient he is at the plate. He is really good at identifying the pitches he wants to swing at, especially for his age. For a "power hitter", Alvarez seldom chases bad pitches.
