Ricky lost size and speed before....BUT if he has trained like a madman, he is capable of being an impcat player behind even an average offensive line.Williams definitely doesn't have that many miles on him and if he really he decides to go the full route here there is major upside. He wouldn't cost anything besides. the under the table payment Bob will have to make for the League to keep Ricky in good piss.
Seriously,I believe Williams is dedicated this time and not just to kindbud.Even at 85-90% he can carry the mail.

I change my mind. Our running game is in horrible shape, and we need to find a solution ASAP. Even if Green gets healthy next week, we need someone that can get more than 2 yards consistently, and finish short yardage runs. I'm not saying Ricky is that guy, but I'd take a flyer to see if he is.

how much more ronica dayne do we have to be subjected to???

like i posted earlier, the risk/reward on ricky williams makes it an absolute no brainer. if he gets reinstated, we should be the first team to call him with an offer.

The Dolphins still have his contractual rights, so we'd either have to trade for him or the Dolphins would have to release him.

Anything might seem a better option than Dayne and Gado. An average of 2 yds a run is embarasing.

It would be one thing if they pounded the ball for 2 yard gains, bit it seems like they dance for their 2 yards. Meaning they aren't punishing the Defensive lines.

Unlikely...the Dolphins still hold Ricky's contractual rights so he wouldn't be able to interview w/ us without the Dolphins permission. I think we might have heard something about this.

    Finances driving Williams' comeback bid

    By Jason Cole, Yahoo! Sports
    October 9, 2007

While people close to Ricky Williams say the oft-suspended running back has taken his latest round of counseling from NFL-sanctioned psychologists seriously, there's really a much simpler motivation for his attempt to return to the field:

Play football or possibly go to jail if he gets too far behind in paying child support.

Williams is in that predicament based on the fact that he has a child support agreement with one of the three mothers of his four children. In 2004, Williams agreed to pay $4,200 per month, maintain life insurance and keep approximately $500,000 in a separate fund for the son he had with Cherie Clark. Clark currently lives in Hawaii, but the agreement was reached in Florida where Williams and Clark met.

Williams, serving a suspension since the start of the 2006 NFL season for violating the league's substance-abuse policy, is not subject to a reduction in financial responsibility as a result of self-induced changes in income or job status, according to Florida law.

The case law on that revolves around a former utility worker who was fired for sending harassing emails to his ex-wife. When the man asked for a reduction in his child support, he was denied because the courts ruled he was responsible for his own actions.

Attorney Doug Reynolds, who represents Clark, has repeatedly noted that case.

"There are all sorts of ways that Ricky can make money off his ability to play, as well as his fame and notoriety as a football player and we expect he'll exhaust all of those options, starting with playing again," said Reynolds, who added that Williams is currently up-to-date with his payments.

Despite playing six years in the NFL after being the No. 5 overall pick in the 1999 NFL draft, Williams is now close to exhausting his funds.

"What kind of (financial) shape do you think he's in?" said a source close to Williams. "Playing in Canada (last season) helped him a lot last year, but he has to play. He knows that."

Williams is ineligible to play in the CFL because of rules adopted by the league after he was signed by Toronto. The CFL, where Williams and former Minnesota running back Onterrio Smith sought refuge during NFL suspensions, is no longer accepting players who run afoul of the NFL's substance-abuse policy.

In April, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell instructed Williams to delay his application for reinstatement until after September. It was later reported that Williams had failed a test for mar1juana.

On Friday, agent Leigh Steinberg said Williams is set to apply again this week.

"Everything Ricky has said to me is that he'll have the paperwork ready to go," Steinberg said. "He's very excited to get back in the league."

Williams missed the 2004 season when he retired following two failed tests for mar1juana in the offseason. Williams was facing a four-game suspension that season, but also had become disenchanted with playing for former Dolphins coach Dave Wannstedt.

Williams returned in 2005 after being welcomed by then-coach Nick Saban.

His return to the Dolphins this time is unclear. Steinberg said there has been no contact with the Dolphins of any kind since Saban quit and was replaced by Cam Cameron.

A source said that Cameron, who has steadfastly declined to comment on Williams, might be willing to bring him back on board. However, it's unclear what Dolphins general manager Randy Mueller wants to do. Mueller was the GM with the New Orleans Saints in 2002 and engineered the trade of Williams to the Dolphins.

I'd give him a try. Like another poster said, If he even shows up to a practice late--just cut him. Maybe it would appease some of the UT homers, too.

Can there be any bigger red-flag than that? This is obviously a person who has not gotten their life back on track, and I can't justify adding an unstable element like that to a team that's trying to turn the corner developmentally.

Denver mar1juana legalization advocates want Ricky Williams to come to town

    Oct 2, 2007

DENVER - A group that led a campaign to legalize mar1juana possession in Denver is posting a billboard advertisement encouraging suspended running back Ricky Williams and the Broncos to get together.

Williams applied for NFL reinstatement this week, his agent said. Williams has played in only 12 NFL games since the start of the 2004 season, but rushed for 3,225 yards in 2002-03. His current suspension began in April 2006 after he violated the league's drug policy for the fourth time. He tested positive for mar1juana this April, again delaying his return.

Williams remains under contract with Miami, where he won the NFL rushing title in 2002. But new coach Cam Cameron has not indicated whether he wants Williams to stay with the Dolphins, who fell to 0-4 Sunday.

The billboard, across the street from Invesco Field, where the Broncos play, will be unveiled Wednesday and will stay up for a month. At a cost of US$3,000, it features a player with dreadlocks in a blue and orange jersey and reads, "Ricky, come to Denver... Where the people support your SAFER choice."

In 2005, Denver residents passed an initiative removing all penalties for possession of small amounts of mar1juana by adults. The campaign was run on the message that mar1juana is less harmful than alcohol. Police have continued prosecuting people under state law, however. Federal law also prohibits possession.

"The National Football League's mar1juana policy is just as irrational as our federal government's mar1juana policy," said Mason Tvert of the group Safer Alternative For Enjoyable Recreation. "In both cases, authorities are steering adults toward using alcohol and punishing them for making the safer choice to use mar1juana instead.

"If (commissioner) Roger Goodell and every NFL player over 21 can go home after a game and have a drink, there is no reason why Ricky Williams should not be allowed to go home and use a less harmful drug."

The initiative Denver voters approved two years ago allows adults to carry up to an ounce of mar1juana. No other state allows pot possession for anything other than medical use.

"Ricky Williams would feel right at home here," Tvert said.

This entire thread is just a wee too desperate for my taste. Ricky ain't going nowhere for awhile. First of all, he has to somehow get reinstated by the NFL. That's one big IF considering he's failed yet another drug test. Then, Miami has to renounce his rights while he still owes them millions of $$$ from violating his contract from the first time. Add it all up and you can conclude that there will be no Ricky in Houston this year. They are going to have to live and die (mostly die) with Green, Gado & Dayne. Green has been exactly what I expected including the "gets hurt" part.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has decided to reinstate Miami Dolphins running back Ricky Williams after a suspension that lasted 18 months because of Williams' violation of the league's substance abuse policy, sources told ESPN.

    Ricky Williams

    Williams

The Dolphins have been notified of the commissioner's decision. It is unknown if the team will welcome him back but it is expected they will have a two-week roster exemption to make that decision.

Williams met last week with league administrators who had raised concerns even though doctors at a Boston-area treament center where Williams spent a good portion of four months were very supportive for his reinstatement, sources said.

The administrators of the substance abuse policy were satisfied with Williams' response to their concerns, sources said, clearing the path for Goodell to reinstate him.

Williams also had written Goodell a personal letter of appeal that accompanied the medical data regarding his treatment since he had a positive test in April, which extended his one-year suspension.
