What is needed to win the Heisman Trophy?

Gaudy statistics, an impressive won-loss record, clutch performances and excelling against high-caliber competition are the typical criteria.

Case Keenum has the stats and performances of a Heisman front-runner.
Houston quarterback Case Keenum has all that.

Gaudy stats? Check. He leads the nation with 3,293 passing yards and has thrown 25 touchdown passes.
Impressive won-loss record? Check. Keenum has led the Cougars to a 7-1 mark.
Clutch performances? Check. Last week, Keenum led Houston on a five-play 77-yard drive in the final minute for a 50-43 victory over Southern Miss. Earlier this season, he guided them on a last-minute game-winning drive against Texas Tech.
    Excelling against high-caliber competition? Check.

The perception is that Keenum's accomplishments are enhanced by playing against inferior competition in Conference USA. That criticism does have some merit: Eight of the 12 Conference USA teams rank 84th or worse nationally in total defense, and none is ranked higher than 39th.

But a closer look at Houston's schedule adds credibility to Keenum's campaign. He has led the Cougars to wins over Oklahoma State and Texas Tech of the Big 12 and Mississippi State of the SEC. Those teams are a combined 16-10, and Oklahoma State is ranked 19th in the BCS.

    Still not convinced?

Consider this: Few would balk if Texas quarterback Colt McCoy or Florida's Tim Tebow were rated among the top Heisman contenders - but Keenum has outplayed both against common opponents.

Keenum threw for 1,337 yards and nine touchdowns in games against Oklahoma State, Texas Tech and UTEP. McCoy passed for 662 yards and five TDs against the same trio. And Keenum passed for 434 yards and four touchdowns, with two interceptions, against Mississippi State. Tebow passed for 127 yards and no touchdowns and had two interceptions returned for touchdowns by the Bulldogs.

    He's got my vote!

It so insanely cool for UH football to be relevant again.

Case should be the front runner but with him being from a college that gets no national recognition and less exposure everyone's going to have Tim "cry baby" Tebow at the top with Colt behin him, even with Florida's horrible wins and Tebow's even more terrible play.

The win against Texas Tech was one year too short, they are not the national contenders they were last year. OKS was still a good win on the schedule but with Dez Bryant out for the rest of the year they may lose more games than anticipated.

Either way, Case should be the biggest Heisman hopeful out of the bunch but I'm thinking the coaches and media will see it different.

I'm all for it! Vote Keenum!!! :D

There's something to be said for a QB that is a great leader. Bottom line is that Keenum was not enough to get it done against UTEP, while McCoy and Tebow have gone undefeated. I don't think you can put Keenum ahead of either of those guys, especially not Tebow. That guy could be the best college QB in the past 10 years.

I'd have to politely disagree on that last point.

Keenum did everything he could to will his team to victory...that is unless you expected him to play on the defensive side of the ball because thats where Houston lost that game.

Going undefeated is not a prerequiste for the Heisman...Bradford's team was not undefeated in 08. Tebow's team lost several games in 07.

I agree with bigtexxx. Keenum sucks. If he was REAL Heisman material he'd play defense, too.

    P*ssy.

If going undefeated as a QB is the only sign of a great leader, then there haven't been too many great leaders in the history of college and pro football.

He should win it, but wont because the media is all over Colt McCoy's jock and its disgusting. McCoy should not even finish in the top 10

Keenum has everything a Heisman winner needs, except the respect he deserves of the people that vote. Next year is his best shot. Finish this season without another loss and UH will be nicely ranked in next summers preseason polls and Keenum will be one of the preseason Heisman favorites. Road games against UCLA & Texas Tech will be his time to shine.

I didn't say that he sucks, but the man does have a lifetime losing record against the Rice Owls.

To put Keenum's name up there with a true college football legend like Tim Tebow is a bit premature.

Well, he is the holder for field goals! With Keenum as the holder I'm surprised they haven't had fakes.

That game against, Souther Miss? I think it was them when he got JACKED UP!

His dad was caught escorting him to the locker room by the hand and he was shown crying his little eyes out.

Can't post pics, at work. But I'm sure someone around here can help... thanks! ;)

correct me if I'm wrong, but Blake Joseph quarterbacked the team versus Rice in 2007 when UH NARROWLY escaped with a victory at Robertson Stadium.

Keenum was the second best quarterback on the field last year at Historic Rice Stadium when Rice put a whopping on the Coogs
