A Warriors/Lakers first-round playoff matchup would be a nightmare for Adam Silver and the NBE. Make it happen, Melo.

    Luxury tax implications.

Does anyone know how much in player salary we can dump in trades (assuming anyone will take some of our players that we aren't using). I don't know enough about salary we have to take back etc.

I get that the whole "CP's contract prevented us from signing other players" is bs because we were going to be over the cap even if he did take a discount. But, does every dollar of salary we have contribute to the luxury tax problem? Or do some kinds of deals not count against the luxury tax?

If so, does any have the requisite knowledge (Bima?) re: what might be achievable to lessen our tax burden considerably to give us some flexibility?

I need a @BimaThug explanation of what's going on here. Who in this story is an asset under what conditions, what is Morey trying to accumulate or spend or accomplish, and what are the logical sequences. Melo, House, Nunnally, Chriss, the whole deal.

Yes every dollar you have contributes to the lux tax problem.

However I think the Rox just see Nunnally as an expendable piece so rather than waive Melo and eat his salary they want to trade him instead. Nunnally's salary isn't guaranteed so he is the one to get cut if no Melo trade happens. It's not a "lux tax" moves per se although it woud definitely lessen the tax bill this has been Morey's MO during the Les era as well, for example we had Jeremy Lin but cut him prior to the season because another dude had a guaranteed contract thats why he ended in NYC.

Basically they think whatever value Nunally can provide is not worth the amount they will pay Melo's salary. There's also the fact that he shot like 25% from his lone game and it is likely he will remain unsigned so the Rox can sign him again once Melo gets traded eventually. I have no opinion on this move important thing is we clear a roster spot for Faried.

If no takers for Melo then now you have no Nunnally, no House, probably no Gordon due to general soreness, and no Ennis due to slashing his calf at home. The Rockets will have to start playing Vincent Edwards and maybe Hartenstein more with Gary Clark. It literally will be The Harden Vipers.

fwiw: This year's roster mgmt by Morey looks like this
    • Players already cut to illustrate Morey's thinking
Onuaku was on guaranteed salary so we traded in the Summer, and we paid Cuban to cut him for us (Luxury Tax Savings)
Zhou Qi was on an extremely team-friendly, NG 4yr contract, and we cut him prior to rest of year salary being guaranteed
MCW was on guaranteed salary so we traded to Bulls, but we paid them Cash to do so (Luxury Tax Saving)

    • Players who can be cut with minimal tax implications
Isaiah is NG for 3yrs (likely will not contribute at all in Playoffs)
      Nunnally on 10-day

    • Players who won't contribute in Playoffs, have no trade value, but who cost most tax to cut
      Nene -- $3.6m --
(remember, he did not play against the Warriors in the WCF)
      Chriss -- $3.2m -- same as Melo
Melo -- $2.4m -- need trade like MCW or Onuaku to remove some tax burden
Clark -- $2+m-ish -- is NG for 3yrs, but 2019-20 salary guarantees if we cut him by 4/10
      Ennis -- $1.6m -- (might contribute in playoffs...lulz, who am I kidding)

    • Players who might contribute in Playoffs, and might have trade value
Knight -- can potentially package dead weight with him in a 2 for 1

    • Players being stashed for later, who also have Trade Value
House (Currently has beaten out all of the above players). House can also be traded now, to entice teams to help us with above moves.

    • Players who need a roster spot created out of the above
      Faried
      House
So, based on how Morey has already cut Onuaku, Zhou Qi and MCW, for lack of skill, we have 8 players with less skill for this year's Playoffs than House and Faried -- Melo, Chriss, Ennis, Nene, Knight, Clark, Isaiah, Nunnally.

    Do something Morey.

btw: Clark's salary next year guarantees if we cut him

    Melo is the pain that won't go away . . . .

There is a time they will have to bite the financial bullet
I think Nunnaly, House and Faried could help us win a championship THIS YEAR

Even against Golden State with Boogie.

I dont get why not waive Melo, its not such a loss they are willing to lose actual players on.
Whats the deal there? They just dont want him to go to a western team or pure money saving?

Probably want to save the 10 bucks we are paying him. If we trade him, likely just a pure salary dump move taking no salary back.

So we are in penny saving mode - not signing house and not waiving Melo already.

Yeah right freeing up a spot. More like we are too cheap to waive Melo.

I'm actually impressed that Melo isn't squawking or openly complaining about being put in timeout for 4 months.

The only positive thing I have to say about this.
