You mean the modem. I don't know if Comcast offers a combination modem/router, but either way that's what you would have been paying the fee for.

IMO i'd get a seperate router and modem. Comcast will need the MAC address off the modem if you don't go with their model (IIRC) when you set it up. Also keep in mind that if anything goes wrong with your own modem they obviously will not cover it. They also have a list of modems that are 'supported' I believe on their website.

I have a Motorola Surfboard kind of like these:
    http://www.amazon.com/Motorola-SB61...6GJ0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1338823807&sr=8-1
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16825122015

though mine is a 6120 model. DOCSIS 3.0 seems to be recommended as a more future proof version.

At that point, you can go with whatever router you want.

Cable modem? I bought mine off Ebay. Just make sure it's on Comcast's list of compatible ones.

Edit: This is the one I bought: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Motorola-SB...50591419239?pt=PCC_Modems&hash=item230ff2b367 It works.

Wireless router? My girlfriend just bought this one, made me set it up, and it's great: http://www.amazon.com/Linksys-EA350...6OR2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1338823978&sr=8-1 Blazing fast, you can plug in a usb hard drive and use it to store music on to access with any machine you have, and you can put an app on your iPhone/iPad to manage it.

Yes, you are correct, Sir. U-Verse combines the modem and router, but Comcast does not.
