So does this mean we get the day off? Not looking forward to going to work in 20 degree weather. What are the chances we have a weather day?
Snowing and sleeting heavy on my way into work and sleeting hard right now on the east side at work right now. We were supposed to have a much warmer than normal winter. This is great.
there was sleet in the morning in pearland..caused a few wrecks on the bridge (McHard) before the beltway.
That is because those Bozos over at the NWS don't know what they are doing In all seriousness, the upper level jet stream will be riding right over us up in the atmosphere starting this evening through early morning hours. That provide the lift necessary to create precipitation. Whether it hits the ground is another story... The NAM, RGEM and Texas Tech model (HRRR) are close range models (and what the NWS typically relies on when forecasting rain within the short term) are showing signs of snow/sleet this evening over the Houston area. Now will it happen? Time will tell.. Spoiler By the way, the HRRR model is pretty good in the 12-24 hour window.. And it has been increasing the snow amount since it first started showing it this morning.
At least that 30 degree Houston temperature will be 40+ degrees warmer than the Twin Cities has been when I arrive on Thursday.
And to add what I said above, you will see 20% to 30% chance of precip added to the forecast for this evening and tonight when they update it in a little bit.
Every run of the HRRR getting more bullish. 20z expanding the winter precip further west with a nice little accumulation for the city.
I will take it! And look at this.. precip is starting to develop out towards Austin. If this were to expand and deepen as it heads this way, things will get very interesting this evening.
NWS coming on board now... Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Houston/Galveston TX 324 PM CST Tue Jan 2 2018 .DISCUSSION... Winter expanding its grip on southeast TX tonight as we see another chance of light frozen precipitation during the mid to late evening, followed by clearing skies and very cold temperatures to start the day tomorrow. Short-term/high-res guidance seems to be converging on redevelopment of showers this evening along tail end of amplifying mid/upper trough overspreading east TX tonight. Forecast soundings suggest this will be frozen precipitation, likely in the form of sleet/snow. We could see a dusting with any stronger shower, however quick duration should limit potential accumulations. Have added chance wording (20-30 PoPs) to the forecast along the axis shown by the models extending roughly n-s from San Jacinto/Polk counties towards the coastal (Galveston/Chambers/eastern Harris/Brazoria) counties. http://forecast.weather.gov/product...GX&product=AFD&format=CI&version=1&glossary=0
of course, my pool system screws up and is down. I've got a frozen pond out there. ice skating anyone?
Big Fun! Snow NYE, high of 22 Jan 1, high of 27 today with freezing drizzle. Spent a few hours driving around putting out hay with the tractor, breaking up the 2" thick ice on the water troughs. Just awesome weather, but the sun will come out tomorrow.
There may be some winter weather watches/warnings coming pretty soon. Especially for northern counties of the Houston area and they will move southward as we get closer to the event and things start to materialize.
Will be interesting to see if schools close tomorrow in Houston. With uncertainty about the forecast for Tuesday and what MIGHT accumulate during the day, I could see them taking the cautious route and cancelling.
