Not another fire BoB thread but hopefully a legit discussion on who should be the next HC whether it's BoB himself or someone else. Something to talk about as the Texans aren't providing much. My takes: 1. Jon Gruden: Yes his name pops up every off season just for about every team for him only to say no thanks. Obviously the catalyst would be Watson whom Gruden thought was the best QB in the draft. Not many openings, if any, have presented a guy like Watson to coach and groom. Super Bowl caliber coach who has gotten a long and close look of current trends in the league. This would be one of my biggest reasons for going after him. As far as a splash hire, Gruden would be as big as it gets. Should be noted that there are rumblings that Tennessee (NCAA) will go after him but think he'd stick in the NFL if given the option. 2. Jim Harbaugh: Likelihood of him bailing on Michigan this early is very slim but should note that he has never finished more than 4 seasons as a coach. Was the QBs coach for Rich Gannon when he won MVP and Super Bowl and got everything you could really imagine out of Luck and Kap in their situations. Harbaugh is notoriously known to be difficult to work with but hard to argue with the results. I do think he'll want another shot at the NFL at some point but he has a really nice gig at Michigan right now. 3. Bill O'Brien: 3 winning seasons and 2 division titles in your first 3 seasons is damn good. Don't care how bad the division was because a lot of franchises in bad divisions haven't come close to that. Obviously BoB still has his issues and remains to be seen if he can overcome them but the connection between Watson/BoB is such a big factor that you can't jump to the conclusion that he'll be canned even should the Texans completely flame out the rest of the season. Injuries make this evaluation that much harder.
I think Harbaugh would be great. With Watson and Clowney here, maybe we can lure him. The new coach will need time. We have a lot of holes and not many picks. I also want the new coach to pick his own GM.
Stop suggesting retreads. Cowher (out of the game 10 years) and Gruden are done Coaching. The game has changed and passed them by. Harbaugh isn’t leaving Michigan. Bill O’Brien will be the coach next year.
To be honest, usually not a fan of retreads but think Gruden/Harbaugh are much better candidates that the Lovie Smiths, Scott Linehans, Jim Schwartzs, Josh McDaniels, or whatever retreads are out there. But don't think Cowher would be a good fit. As for BoB, the big question is whether you give him the extension or let him coach for his job. Another question is whether he'd want to do the latter.
In light of the defense this year, I guess no one gives a **** about Mike Vravel as HC or even retaining him as DC under a new HC anymore.
No way Obrien gets fired after losing three of his best five players for the year early in the season. Said it before and I'll say it again - the guy may end up here for 20+ seasons. If he wants to.
3. Bill Cowher 4. Bill Parcells 5. Jimmy Johnson 6. Marv Levy 7. Bud Grant 8. Don Shula 9. Joe Gibbs 10. John Madden
The only way Bill O'Brien isn't head coach this year is if he doesn't want to or somehow there is some major locker room implosion.
Agreed. The Texans led the league in average points per game with over 30 until Watson was hurt. So basically BOB and Watson had the best offense in football during that time. McNair and company will not want to break up that chemistry.
The fact this is a thread shows some incompetent minds this forum has. Sure, lets change up the scheme that your rookie QB was dominating the NFL in. If BoB wasn't the coach next year the reasoning would be that he was demoted to OC. We all obviously know that could and would never happen. He is going to be here long term.
