There and General Joes on Nantucket...they had buffets, their mistake. 25 starving HS football players walk in.... Big Jay (he was a bodybuilder type by the time he was 18 or so) goes to the Mongolian BBQ for about the 5th time...this kid at the other table says "Daddy..He's going back AGAIN!"
An early 2000's game that I loved was Ferrari F355 Challenge. Remember that was the first racing game I saw that worked like a real manual car. Game was hard as hell but it did teach me the concept of driving a manual.
I always thought Dragon's Lair was really cool (for the time)...but could never make it beyond 30-45 seconds in the game without losing all of my lives.
I missed this whole era because I was on the console. But when I saw Zaxxon, I knew where I wanted the console games to go. The only other time I saw something that turned on light bulbs for me was Outrun and Dragon's lair.
This thread is bringing back some memories. Anyone go to SuperTrack??? I remember getting my butt handed to me in SF and MK combat there. Also AstroWorld had some ok arcades.
I would always spend the hottest part of the day at Astroworld at the arcades. I remember spending four hours owning Paperboy. Were there rides and girls? Sure, but I was in the zone...as a paperboy.
This is what I was playing at Celebration Station: Actually beat X-men, took a whole 5 dollar bill. Never beat the Simpsons.
I always felt ripped off inserting quarters into arcade games when I had an Atari at home (and later a Nintendo and Sega Genesis), so I never got very good at arcade games. I would look around the arcade and see guys playing forever on one quarter and it just ticked my young brain off. I sucked at this one, but it was a thrill just sitting in one of these machines. What could possibly be cooler than Star Wars back then? Use The Force! Remember this one? I'm still not sure how to play it or if pressing the buttons even did anything, but I know it took a few quarters from me: This one was a blast to play (pay no attention to Pippen, I never liked him). It was easy, the games were always close, and the graphics were great at the time: I was probably best at this one. I can remember entering my initials with the steering wheel pretty much every time I played. Prepare to Qualify! The graphics on this one were amazing back in the day, too, although by then I was into pool (and later, losing money with slot machines):
Fun Fact: Donkey Kong was originally going to star Popeye and Bluto, but they coudn't secure the rights. Later, they were sued by Universal for copyright infringement. They wanted a piece of the profits. Problem was Universal stole the original Kong themselves. It was booted out of court.
X-Men, Simpsons, TMNT were all crucial. Loved Rampage and Mortal Kombat, as well. This bad mutha gets slept on:
Ha! Speedy’s! My childhood years were spent at both Malibu locations but high school was all about Speedy’s. We would get drunk and go there and spin each other out and inevitably get kicked out for crashing the cars while doing it. Was a bi-monthly occurrence. No idea why they kept letting us in. Never played any games there but man that place brings back memories gotta add outrun to the list. But the damn game was like 50 or 75 cents so couldn’t play it long
