I believe Morey is doing this to convince Yao's agent to sign an extension lower than Yao's agent expects form the open market.

He did the same with Landry publicly commenting on his knee.

If this be the case then it could evolve into another McGrady situation and the Rockets loosing their free agent for zero in return!
