What position was S.A. in when the got the first pick and got Tim Duncan? I now they didn't have the worst record even though they tanked every game they could.

San Antonio was 20-62 that season .... bad enough for third seed in the Lotto Race.

Only Vancouver (14-68) and Boston (15-67) were nastier.

Vancouver, as the worst team in the league, was guaranteed no worse than the 4th pick in the Draft. That's what they got (since their name didn't come up as one of the 1-3 Lottery winners).

The surprise of that draft was Philadelphia, with the 5th worst record (22-60), landed the second pick. Boston got the third.

Vancouver had no shot at the first pick in that draft since by NBA rules they weren't allowed to get the 1st pick -- they were a "new" team. Same went for Toronto that year. The Grizz had a 2-out-of-3 chance of getting the 2nd or 3rd pick and failed. When you think about it, those are good odds, but you definitely aren't assured of anything. This is exactly what the NBA wants, too. It's why they've changed their lottery procedures a number of times over the past few years -- to make it impossible to tank and be assured or even close to being assured the first pick in the draft.
