Chavez Backs Sheehan Plan for Bush Protest

By IAN JAMES, Associated Press Writer 2 hours, 24 minutes ago

CARACAS, Venezuela - Cindy Sheehan, the peace activist who just announced that she is weighing a run for Senate, plans to protest again outside
President Bush's Texas ranch, Venezuela's president said Sunday with Sheehan by his side.

Hugo Chavez, his arm around Sheehan's shoulders, told a group of activists that Sheehan had told him that during Holy Week, in April, "she is going to put up her tent again in front of Mr. Danger's ranch."

"She invited me to put up a tent. Maybe I'll put up my tent also," Chavez said, to applause from an audience invited to his weekly broadcast on the final day of the World Social Forum, an annual gathering of anti-war and anti-globalization activists.

Sheehan, whose 24-year-old soldier son, Casey, was killed in
Iraq in 2004, thanked Chavez for "supporting life and peace" and she was impressed by his sincerity.

"He said, 'Why don't I run for president?'" she said. "I just laughed."

Sheehan, who lives in Berkeley, Calif., said Saturday that she is strongly considering challenging Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein (news, bio, voting record) because the lawmaker will not support calls to immediately bring the troops home.

Sheehan, 48, said running in the Democratic primary in June would help "bring attention to all the peace candidates in the country."

Sheehan, who was visiting Venezuela for the six-day forum, told The Associated Press that she will decide whether to run after talking with her three adult children in California.

Sheehan accused Feinstein of being out of touch with Californians on the war in Iraq.

Feinstein's campaign manager, Kam Kuwata, said the senator did not support Bush and felt she had been misled by his administration. With troops committed, Feinstein believes immediate withdrawal is unworkable, he said.

"Senator Feinstein's position is, 'Let's work toward quickly turning over the defense of Iraq to Iraqis so that we can bring the troops home as soon as possible,'" Kuwata said in an interview on Saturday.

On Sunday, when Chavez passed the microphone to Sheehan on his show, she blamed Bush for the killings of innocents in Iraq.

Noting that the singer and activist Harry Belafonte recently called Bush "the greatest terrorist in the world" on Chavez's show, Sheehan said: "I agree with him."

Chavez said his government would help protest the war in Iraq by supporting a drive to gather petitions and delivering them to the U.S. Embassy in Caracas. Chavez, who before the war in Iraq had friendly relations with
Saddam Hussein, has been a frequent and strident critic of the war.

Well, a lot of people will consider her a traitor after this. I find it all rather bizarre. It's obviously a calculated move on her part to get her word out against Bush. Too bad it's not going to change anything and this may have hurt, rather than help, her cause. Who's next? Saddam?

She also said she'd challenge Dianne Feinstein for her senate seat.

What planet does she live on if she thinks she can actually win?

So does that make shrub a right wing dictator? Because if I'm mistaken Chavez was elected by the people of Venezuela. Or is that too much for you to deal with? You can nitpick like an armchair election monitor all you want, but the fact is he was elected. Just like the f!@#ing moron in the White House. So thank's for your fair and balanced commentary.

Hitler was elected, on March 6th, 1933. Does that mean he was a good guy too?

Our president can be removed from power, either by congress or by being voted out at the next election. The people of Germany could not remove Hitler from power once he claimed it. The people of Venezuela cannot remove Chavez from power either. (His re-election was a charade, similar to the Chinese elections). Chavez is military through and through and he is there to stay.

We have a good president here and you libs need to look around and realize that. Bush doesn't base his policy on what the polls are saying like Mr. Clinton did. He stays true to his convictions, and bravo to him for doing so.

We do not have a good President. A large majority of Americans, today, view his presidency as a failure, and a majority of them plan to vote for someone besides a Republican in the '06 elections, which will be the beginning of this nation crawling out from under the Bush nightmare.

Having said that, I think Sheehan made a mistake to attach herself to Chavez. She is beginning to look foolish, in my opinion. She is being used by Chavez. I find it a rather sad spectacle. Sheehan is in danger of making herself irrelevant, and that is a tragedy. She's suffered enough already.

I'll state one fact about Chavez since he was elected to office: He has destroyed any vestige of democracy left in Venezuela. He's put his cronies on the courts, at PDVSA and in all other institutions of power so that it's now impossible to get rid of Chavez other than a coup. He has set himself up as ruler for life and no institution or person in that country can challenge him. It's a classic case of once in power, change the rules to stay in power.

Sheehan praising this guy is disgraceful. It's one thing to be anti-Bush (which I am). It's another to be a pacifist and a leftist (which I am not). But it's another giant step to embrace an anti-democratic dictator who endorses Cuba, North Korea and Iran. Until reading about this, I respectfully disagreed with Sheehan on issues, especially because she lost her son in this disastrous Iraq mess. The respect is gone now. She is a pathetic sideshow, but in America you can choose what you want to be.

Just an FYI, futures contracts (which correctly predicted the results of the '04 POTUS election) are currently favoring the Republicans (likely either McCain or Allen) to defeat the Democrats in the '08 elections (likely with Hillary or Warner). I know you mentioned the '06 elections, but I want to make it clear that the Republicans still have a good hold on the country.

It's more than just one link. He didn't change things in one fell swoop. It was gradual. Whenever judges or legislators would resist what he wanted, he would act. When I run across a good expose/summary of the structural changes Chavez has made in the Venezuelan government, I'll post a link here.

If this country elects someone like Bush again in 2008, we deserve it. I don't think it will happen because Bush will be radioactive. To have a chance to win, the GOP nominee will have to run away from the Bush failures.

He "allowed" the recall referendum in 2004 (that he won). Appointing cronies sounds familiar, but this is not the same as declaring oneself ruler for life. That would indeed be very worrisome.
Actually, his policies have some positives, and the criticism is not as bad as some of the other dictators in that part of the world. However, he hasn't been particularly friendly to the US administration. He is a nationalist and has a socialist agenda. Plus he cozies up to Cuba and Libya. At the same time, Venezuela is the second largest provider of oil to the US, so he is on the hot seat.
The speed with which the earlier coup attempt by carmona was heralded by the New York Times and others was disconcerting to say the least. The Bush administration has since tried to distance itself from the coup, but at the time, it immediately endorsed the new government under businessman Pedro Carmona. I would hate for us to demonize him as a runup to his "elimination".

Yeah, those futures contracts did you well with USC too. They also all severely jumped to Kerry when the flawed daytime polling results starting floating around the internet. And they currently give an independent a 2.5% chance of winning the election. Keep using those futures contracts as your barometer...

As for Sheehan - she's a nutcase. Her original role - a grieving mother wanting an explanation - made sense. Her new moveon.org role as anti-war spokeswoman is just nutty. She's become obsessed with herself.
