VLC plays almost anything, including MKV.
Xbox supports MKV.
I also have a WDTV Media Player which supports MKV.
If you use Plex, you can easily use MKV also.
If you have a Mac and an iPad, you can easily put an MKV (or any other format) on your iPad using a Mac app called Waltr. Really useful and simple to use.
