His best senior is a transfer from Tulane, in his 2nd year here, his best senior guard (who he didn't recruit himself) has been suspended 3 times already and might be allowed to play in the conference/national tournament. Their best player is a freshman big (yet again) who would be stupid to not declare for the draft.
Sources: Shaka Smart’s Departure Likely Key quotes: "I have three sources who have said some form of this, but more to the point I have zero sources saying Smart is definitely staying another year... I think - and to be clear, this part is my personal speculation - Texas is helping Shaka find another home in exchange for a reduction on the guaranteed money left on his deal." If the buyout can really be reduced by Shaka taking another job, I hope CDC is looking for some desperate mid-major. He has to go.
Bah! https://www.barkingcarnival.com/2019/3/10/18258653/sources-shaka-smarts-departure-likely Lots of speculation in there, but I'm looking for silver linings.
Kansas really misses Lagerald Vick, they have no outside game at all now. They're out in the 1st round if they get the wrong matchup. Texas problem is the same old problems we've seen all year.
I don't think anything Tennessee does will affect Texas. The only way Shaka is leaving early is if another school takes him off of our hands.
Barnes was cooked at Texas. I would imagine he would admit he needed a fresh start at Tennessee, too. We just missed on our coaching hire after we thought we'd snagged the hottest young coach in the country. The big issue with the administration's handling of Shaka was granting him an extension.
I'll be flying into New York just after the NIT final ends. If the timing had worked out better, I definitely would've tried to go to the game at MSG. Not because I care about the NIT, but because it would've been fun to see the Longhorns play there.
