Obama should move out early and let Trump get to work.

It's hard to argue that the guy isn't trying. Most president-elects do nothing at this point. Even if it is a bank we're talking about.

I can see CNN now :
    Either:
"Trump didn't bow to him!! OMG Racist."
    or
"Trump is taking sides with the Japanese, literally what Hitler did."

watching trump have this much success/achievement even before he enters office has to be really hard on democrats

but losing can build character so they always have that to take comfort in

Side Note: Apparently Trumps approval numbers are soaring like the national debt under Obama.

Trump is playing 4d chess people and you have to admit the Air Force One move is pretty smart. He's basically saying the government needs to curb spending and it starts with the President. It's symbolic. It's actually what a businessman, not a politician would do.

It would be more informative to see who own 45% of this Bank

You're right, it would be informative. Who owns 45% of Softbank?

It is amazing how anyone can be proud of this. We have companies now openly paying tribute to our president elect. Lets be perfectly clear, Softbank didn't come out of generosity. They came for a reason.

Softbank owns a little company called Sprint. You also might remember that Softbank wanted to then buy TMobile and merge it with Sprint which regulators in the DOJ and FCC stopped because it would threaten the competitive balance in the wireless industry. Softbank and Deutsche Telekom both admitted well before the election that they were hoping for a Republican administration and now they got their wish.

Softbank desperately needs TMobile. TMobile's success with Sprint's spectrum portfolio will turn what has been a money sink for Softbank into a viable company. It'll just come at the expense of the American consumer who will lose a competitive wireless option.

This is cronyism at its worst and the fact that we're applauding this is disgusting.

It's called deal making. I get where you are coming from, but I'd assume most would. Derp, no duh they are a business, they are not philanthropists. Of course they are doing it for their own benefit
You cut deals where both parties walk away happy, both sides win.

Let Sprint merge, honestly they are a dieing company so it's merge or die-- either way leads to that "less competitive market" you say you worry about. Which it actually wont to the extend you say because subcontracted companies that use their networks aren't going away and will only grow, especially as technology progresses. It will balance out in the end.

It's a good deal for America. America gets 50,000 jobs and 50 billion dollars invested into the economy instead of the trend of outsourcing to India.

It's amazing that your head is so far up the DNC's butt that you literally tune out real world reason and logic

What an amazing sense of humor! The irony in your post was totally unexpected.

No please, tell us. Who owns it? Also, I'm curious, how do you know? Was there some sort of message which circulated somewhere that we all may have missed? Looking forward to the link!

    'LOL'

Everything Sprint has touched in its 30 year history has turned to absolute ****. The completely massacred Nextel. I am fine with this merger. TMobile, another crappy company, can sink along with Sprint.

But im not sure what you're whining about. Take a look at what the Obama administration has let ATT get by with. Where is your cry about cronyism there? Where is your cry about zero rated content ATT is doing with DirecTV? Talking about a slap in the face for net neutrality. Obama has let Ma Bell re-assimilate under the ATT name.

Its honestly sad. We finally have an administration that is being proactive on the economy and all the liberals can say is "capital cronyism".

Liberals want to hand out welfare instead of creating jobs. They want to heavily tax and force companies to provide benefits for every employee, instead of creating more jobs and forcing the employers to be competitive.

This is nonsense. You can support the merger but what I dont understand is how you're ok with corporate leaders coming to a president and saying, hey i'll do X and in exchange you do Y. That is cronyism. That is what Trump was complaining about during the whole campaign. The man made all kinds of statements about draining the swamp but this is one of the most blantant examples of cronyism that one could ever produce. The same goes for that idiotic deal with Carrier.

The DOJ has its own process for approving mergers and as part of those agreements, companies can negotiate job guarantees etc.. That's a perfectly legal process. What is repuslive is going to someone who isnt even president yet, and essentially offering a promise of jobs and money (promises that Softbank may never actually act on mind you) to guarantee support for a merger that Softbank has wanted for years.

Also, specifically on Sprint. You may not like Sprint but it serves an important role in the marketplace. It has usurped TMobile's traditional role as the cheap carrier that puts downward pressure on prices. And while they are a loss making entity currently, the same arguments were made way back in 2011 when ATT tried to buy TMobile. All of the silly statements that TMobile was a loss leader and that it wouldn't survive proved 100% false. The DOJ decision to prevent a TMobile buyout helped all customers by extension.

TMobile has been profitable for several quarters and has led the industry in adds. You can't possibly say that they aren't a solid company at this point. And TMobile at one time was in Sprint's position as a company bleeding money. Everyone predicted that if ATT couldn't buy TMobile, it would fold and collapse. None of that happened. Wireless prices actually decreased over time as well. Hell ATT ended up being the one to start shedding customers. They've had next to 0 organic growth of postpaid customers over the past few years.

And frankly when the DOJ analyzes mergers, they do have industry analysts actually look at this stuff. I know everyone thinks this is political but the DOJ and FCC do a lot of studies on this. I've been through anti-trust filings in both the US and the EU. I've seen the process. The Obama administration wasn't out to get anyone.

Lastly, my argument isn't about Sprint itself. If the DOJ determines that Sprint merging with Tmobile won't hurt consumers, then fine. My issue is with Softbank engaging in crooked deal making with our president-elect. If they want to merge, they should go through the process like everyone else. But buying hotel rooms at the Trump hotel and then making public appearances with Trump to project a narrative is cronyism. He's inviting companies to put on a show in front of cameras and in exchange, he promises them favorable regulatory treatment.

No one should be ok with that.

Oh come on Exiled. Just take a screenshot of the broadcast and share it with everyone. I'll translate it.

Since Softbank group doesn't publish its ownership structure and no owner of Softbank Corp owns more than 20%, we want to hear your extra special information that has been hidden from everyone else.

What a Waste of time ..

    "
SoftBank Group Corp. Chief Executive Officer Masayoshi Son told President-elect Donald Trump he would create 50,000 new jobs in the U.S. through a $50 billion investment in startups and new companies.

The money will come from SoftBank’s previously announced $100 billion technology fund, according to a person familiar with the matter. That investment vehicle has a $45 billion commitment from the government of Saudi Arabia and $25 billion from Tokyo-based SoftBank, which operates technology and wireless companies around the world."

Trump could do one of these every day and it would be a drop in the bucket of our economy, but if it gets him the political capital to make big macro changes (lower corporate tax rate, repeal Dodd Frank/Obamacare, rein in regulators/EPA), that's a good thing.

This money was already slated for investment into the U.S. - Trump just got played and the guy extracted something out of the president-elect in exchange for nothing. Maybe Trump knows it and doesn't care and just wants the media attention.

We have a fool of fools for president who is going to get played by every single corporation.
