I really need to watch this movie at some point. I imagine, being such a fan of Airplane!, it would be surreal watching the totally serious movie it's based on. Like you would keep waiting for the jokes that would never come.

 

(Parenthetically, I was thinking last night, If someone asked me what old comedy news story still makes me laugh despite repeated viewings, what would it be? It would be the near-disaster of which we are speaking.)

I remember catching it randomly while stuck in a hotel room on a business trip. I kept on thinking there was something very familiar about it even though I was sure I had never seen it. They got to a scene where the air traffic controller tells Johnny to get him some coffee and Johnny says “Right away sir!” It dawned on me.
