    For the first time last week, I saw the 80's The Thing. Christ, was that movie awesome or what? Why I had never seen it before I don't know. My favorite line comes at the end when they are planting the TNT and Nauls disappears. The thing pops out of the ground and with a lit fuse McReady says "Yeah, **** you, too!" Classic. Instant classic.

    As far as the "hollywood makes to many remakes", maybe they should try re-releasing films, like they did with Star Wars and Grease. I would love to take a date to see the 80's The Thing or Casablanca.

    That's normal for sequels, though. Same basic plot. Honestly, I'm just glad that it isn't a remake as much as it's a prequel. If it does well enough, maybe we could see an actual sequel. There was an actual comic sequel over a decade ago, and I know that there are a few spinoff comics out there too. I'd like to see the mythos expanded much like Aliens and Predator.

    Oooo...looks like you can get the The Thing: Northman Nightmare free online right now: link

    I saw a trailer on TV the other day. It may be one of the ones in this thread. It looked like they squeezed all the action scenes into the trailer as it was cutting in and out of various action scenes. Hard to tell what was going on in the trailer. But, it did look pretty sweet as far as action goes. It may not be a totally original storyline but, if there are sweet action sequences, then that could make up for it. If they make us care about the characters, then that would help. I just hope it's not going through the motions with action sequences...and it all actually works in the context of the storyline. Given all the time that has passed since the original, I think we should expect the alien and action scenes to be a whole lot better than in the original film (obviously). I may have to check this one out in the theater...as it looks like total eye candy to be experienced on the big screen. It seems like the new film has the alien being more imaginative in how it behaves (likely boosted by technological advances) compared to the original. So, I imagine the original's alien is going to look "boring" in comparison after seeing this one. We will see.

    I don't know about that, I still watch Carpenter's The Thing and the effects used are still very effective, IMO.

    So much so that I was hoping they wouldn't go crazy with the CGI but like you said maybe they are just showing a lot of the action in the trailers and the actual film maybe more subtle.

    Saw it last night;

    Personally I think you’d be fine with watching it on disk. It’s exactly what I expected, too much CGI for my taste, no suspense and the characters are paper thin. It watchable but not great and really doesn’t add anything to overall story outside of usual “oh that’s how that got there” stuff from prequels.

    It’s prequel but some scenes are lifted right from the original and near the end a few from Aliens.

    Ramona Flowers is pretty bad in the lead role, she’s mis-casted in my opinion.

    Not as bad as theatre. They keep on remaking plays by that Shakespeare guy.
