Its weird, uncomfortable and comes out at the most inopportune times. Im talking about the under the breath laughs of Clyde Drexler.

Never have I cringed so much watching a broadcast then when I do watching him. He has his moments from time to time, but overally this laughing at his own **** has got to stop.

A typical exchange might sound like this:

Bill: "Looks like Yao is out for the season with a broken foot."

Clyde: (laugh, laugh, laugh) "And things are only getting worse for the Houston Rockets."

Bill: "I always only wanted to wish Eddie Griffin the best of luck in his nba career.."

Clyde: (laugh, laugh, laugh) "And things are only getting worse for Eddie Griffin."

    ex.
Clyde - "It's what makes him the consummate professional! Ha-ha-ha!"

    ex.
Bill brings up Trucks and gas guzzlers, enviroment.

    Clyde - "Ha-ha-ha, I drive a truck Bill!"

    ex.
Bill - "Well.... We wish the best for Eddie's family and hope he's in a better place now."

Clyde - "Ha-ha-ha! You can't feel sorry for the guy. Struggled early in his career, never a very good player. Typical first class knucklehead."

If you listen in carefully he yells YES, over Bill when the Rockets hit a big shot in the closing minute of the game.

Bill: Although Drexler was key to us winning our second ring, he doesn't deserve his number retired here.

    Clyde: HA HA HA "what?"

    My analysis:

I think he does it as a stall, to give himself some time to think of something to say a lot of the times. It's such a slow laugh, followed by a 1-2 second pause. The problem is that buy laughing, he's limiting his options by predicating the tone he's going to use use when he finally makes a comment, and he also often forces himself to try to think of something clever to say when it's really not necessary.

He needs to use an affirming phrase to fill those voids in his thought process instead. Like:

Bill: "Looks like Yao is out for the season."

Clyde: "Yep, mmhmm... It will be interesting to see how the Rockets respond this time."

Of course, I don't really expect that to happen, and I'm not sure how much I care. He annoyed the crap out of me at first, but I find these things strangely charming now.

Clyde Drexler will criticize others in a nice way.

When Mike Harris played in a game recently, Worrell talked about how tough he is as a player and mentioned that his time at Rice helped groom or develop him.

Clyde said, "That's not saying a whole lot."

i wish clyde would quit being nice and just relax. he had no problem mixing it up and talking trash when he was a player. i've heard the guy give great interviews and if he just acted like that when broadcasting he would be awesome.

I think that time he was just trash talking Rice since they were in the Southwest Conference with UH during Clyde's playing days.

Clyde is the worst announcer in basketball though, absolutely terrible.

I just realized. President Bush does the same thing.

Reporter: "Some people say we might be headed for a recession."
Bush: "ha, ha, ha. And things are only getting worse for the next president."

haha bill is great, but me n my friends laugh when bill starts showing his age and starts getting cranky at the players, tone changes and just repeatedly picks on things when the rockets are losing...
