Everything We Know About The New B-21 Stealth Bomber And The Looming Battle To Build It

The U.S. Air Force has given us our first glimpse of what will hopefully become American’s next stealth bomber. Originally designated the Long-Range Strike Bomber (LRS-B), the aircraft will now be called the B-21. Why is this announcement today such a big deal? Because it’s as much about the B-21's struggle to even get built as it as about what it could mean for America’s defense apparatus.

The B-21 is a critical part of America’s air power future, and at the very least it represents a partial panacea for emerging area-denial and anti-access (AD/A2) capabilities—in other words, things that deny U.S. forces the ability to come within hundreds or even thousands of miles of an enemy’s territory.

Today these high-end capabilities are being developed and deployed by countries like China and Russia, but they will soon be available to others as well.

With this in mind, the B-21 is designed to be able to penetrate the most advanced enemy air defenses after traveling thousands of miles from the safety of its home base. Once it arrives in its operating area the B-21 will have a devastating and diverse payload of weaponry. In other words, it has the ability to beat the enemy’s AD/A2 capability through stealth and guile.

This bomber will get shot down by our own forces.

A stealth bomber whose sole addition to our arsenal is to fly 1,000 miles to its target seems very low on our upgrade needs. These types of very high dollar, but low ROI improvements routinely get shot down by the Generals in charge of the budgets. They have other things they want to buy.

    This won't get built.

Battlefield 5 might take place during WW1. Read all about it in the thread called Battlefield 5 might take place during WW1. I'm too blitzed to read it, need cliff notes. War is so awesome though.

It is meant to replace our current bomber fleet which was heavily featured in Dr. Strangelove 1964. After billions in spending on development, they didn't build enough B2 bombers for it to be even remotely worth it. So if you want to continue bombing people, you kinda need a new bomber. There isn't a huge advantage in basing them in country when you can just refuel. They are trying to build a "budget" bomber that has a decent survivability. SAMs are cheap, most people have them now.

Hogwash. It's old warfare. Drones are cheap, too. The generals are already arguing over this bomber. The argument is that they don't need a long range bomber. There is a lot of other real, high tech advancements they want, too.

What exactly do we need to bomb from 1,000 miles away. There might be an answer to that, but it must also have a ROI that doesn't stop other things from advancing that they want.

The guys who lost out on the bomber are way ahead of you. They are passing it off as some "hybrid" savior of africa. I think we all know it will be dealing death from above.

So are we winning? Australia just raised their defense spending huge due to China. I guess Battlefield 6 will be on the artificial islands and East Asia. We might need a new plane, B3 sounds like an awesome name btw.

We need to put more money into roads, schools, healthcare and less into building crap for the military when the only threat to us is folks using AK47s.

Putting the cart behind the horse.

We use that badass to blow up brown people's roads, schools, and healthcare systems, so that we can put money into rebuilding them back up.

Win win stimulus package make America great.
