First person I remember seeing in concert, in the Astrodome in the early 80's at the rodeo. I actually met him in Lake Jackson at a Bucee's in the 90's. He gave us a tour of his tour bus. Nice guy.
Finally, a music thread that I can get into. I'm apparently too old to get Radiohead, and while I like what I've heard from Arcade Fire, I wouldn't call myself a fan. I love Charley Pride, though. <iframe title="YouTube video player" width="480" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/ws4z10tY8H4" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
It didn't influence rock, it was rock. But southern DJs in the '50s wanted to segment their markets JC style, and then as a rebuttal to the counterculture, so they've painted themselves in an artistic corner. The same thing could probably be said about R&B and rap once they both emulated the subversive, militant and working-class segment of black culture; at a time when AAs were probably diversifying musically and assimilating culturally more than ever. The irony is that both genres have great demographics and are insanely popular, but still derivative as hell.
