I have a few days to kill in west/south/central Texas next week. Any recommendations on places to chow?(excluding Austin/San Antonio). How about historic hotels or off the beaten path accommodations? Anyone ever stay in the Gage in Marathon? Thanks.
been to the Gage and it's a great place. Also, great people...hang out at the bar for a little after dinner.
West/South/Central Texas is a bit large of a range. Care to narrow it down? Gage is great, btw. Alpine/Ft. Davis/Marfa also on the West side of things.
Thanks guys, the Gage is on the list for sure. I haven't really narrowed it down too much....coming in from the west, down I-10ish way. I'm just freewheeling with no agenda and no clock. Probably a stop in Fredricksburg, then maybe something around Canyon Lake. I'll be hitting Lockhart for the BBQ somewhere along the way as well.
I'd pick a Bed and Breakfast place in Fredricksburg. Here's site with a gallery to choose from: http://www.absolutecharm.com
here's some more I've been too: Marfa, TX -- Hotel Paisano http://www.hotelpaisano.com/ Davis Mountain State Park -- Indian Lodge http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g60807-d123386-Reviews-Indian_Lodge-Fort_Davis_Texas.html You can visit the McDonald Observatory, too And this is a new hotel built on ruins in Terlingua very near Big Bend that I want to do next time I'm in the area. http://www.laposadamilagro.net/amenities.html
Is the Green Parrot still on the square? Any place to stay close to there? If I start drinking, I won't be driving. If I waited until Dec 30th, The MoonDoggs of Marfa are playing there:grin: I'll make note of that place....it looks nice. The last time I stayed down there was in a dump with a shared bathroom where some nasty drunken ho peed all over the toilet. I have my limits when sober and that's one of them. There's some rather "interesting" inhabitants down in Terlingua, eh. They looked at me like I was from outer space.
