What's amazing is that some people are still acting like she went on a racist tirade.

    She is owed an apology.

I guess it's interesting to see who still clings to the idea that she got what she deserved even after the truth has come out.

It really shows who's willing to look at facts and evidence with an open mind, and who prefers to cling to their own agenda despite facts.

It says a lot. I can look at other threads here on the same topic and see the same. It is really funny to see people flailing wildly trying to hold on to anything to justify their bias rather than look at the facts and evidence.

B-Bob, you are one of my favorite posiers. I enjoy your wit. However, your steps here are a bit too circuitous to answer en toto.

However, let's examine some of your "wows." First, I randomly introduced the KKK into the conversation because I needed an image large enough to demonstrate the enormity of edwardc's accusation with an excusatory "maybe." If you will notice, I used the same "maybe" innuendo.

I had just seen move-on.org's ad showing the KKK at a tea party rally but omitting the footage of them being rather vigorously asked to leave. I have repeatedly pointed out how the majority of tea partiers are not racists, but that is not what posters here want to believe. As the budding "journal-list" scandal is showing, the press likes to hide Democratic black eyes and trumpet the eyesores of opposition groups like the tea parties.

Please refer to my response to RJ concerning the comparison of the NAACP with the KKK based on their need to continue racism and why.

Because Obama ordered Shirley Sherrod's dismissal in a panic before the facts could be reviewed seems to have escaped you. Yes, this isolated incident of the NAACP acting against racism is notable and laudable, but I don't believe they acted to jettison her for racism as much as for political expediency -- Obama et al didn't want a scandal so close to the mid-term elections.

Sherrod should be given her job back, and I was proud of the Obama apology even though it was through Robert Gibbs. All people make mistakes, but correcting them without excuses shows character. The party most culpable in this travesty is 24-hour cable news and the need to get it first rather than worrying about such things as being factual, fair and complete.

As to continuing my assertion that the NAACP, like the KKK, feeds on racism to generate cash and support, I do not retreat. As far as running away, I had prior obligations. I thought I would be back at a reasonable hour to continue, but I did not. For not giving you a heads up before leaving, I apologize.

No problem there. I have spent more time here today than I often do only because I have been waiting all day for files from other people. I can't work but I can't leave my computer.

To be fair as I've noted you do often engage in discussion unlike others who seem more interested in just trying to rile people up rather than discussion.

Again thought that is a huge generality and is as much a truth as saying that the Republican Party and Nazi Party owe their existence to a desire to govern. It is a statement that is so general as to be irrelevant except if it is to be considered as a smear.

The forum is what you make of it. People get heated, these are controversial subjects, but at the same time it is possible to have a discussion on these subjects and still maintain ones composure.

Stretching points to absurdity is fair, but you must be careful of breaking the logic. Just as Republicans and Nazis "owe their existence to the desire to govern," the same can be said of their need to breathe. Where I disagree is that I do not believe that it "is so general as to be irrelevant except if it is to be considered as a smear."

Racism is not necessary for Republicans or Democrats to win elections. Racism is not necessary for the tea parties to be cohesive. Racism is not necessary for bureaucrats to make decisions. Racism in and of itself is not necessary for anything worthwhile. Everybody can do without it. The world is a better place without it. However, that does not change the fact that the two groups in question (NAACP and KKK -- regardless of the merits or demerits of their genesis) cannot exist in their present forms without racism. Doesn't that make you wonder whether, if neither group existed, the world might be a better place to live?

There is plenty of blame to go around. It starts with the people who doctored the tape, edited it, and circulated it. Firing Sherrod certainly deserves blame as well.

I understand about real life getting in the way of posting. I'm not faulting you for that. You do often discuss issues, so I'm happy to respond to you. basso does not engage in honest discussion, so he will get no effort to discuss.

You are right that both exist because of racism. One happens to exist to combat it the other exist to advance it. That is why that your argument is so general as to be meaningless. Keeping with the Nazi example it would be like saying that the ADL and the Nazi party both exist because of Anti-Semitism.

But anyway you have admitted that stretching points to absurdity is fair therefore I don't see why you have ever had cause to complain when people have compared the Tea Party to the KKK or Nazis.

Then, stretching your argument to absurdity, you advocate that the use of racism is permissable if it advances your cause. Ergo, racism is not an ill or evil, which then follows that Nazis, or the KKK, like the NAACP, are not reprehensible organizations. No?

Now my question is that, since we are going to extrapolate that the Nazis/KKK and the tea parties are indistinguishable, how do the tea parties generate funds based on its use of racism in the same way that the NAACP does?

I honestly can't believe that thumbs is STILL not only defending his historically stupid posts in this thread but continuing to equate the NAACP (a group formed to combat racism) with a the KKK (a group formed to foment it). Whoever made the recent ADL/Nazi parallel was right on. This goes way beyond naive or stupid or wrong. There should be a new word invented for this kind of weird and obsessive meltdown.

He has completely transformed into giddyup. But like an even dumber version.

I'm not saying they should get a free pass, I'm just trying to explain to you what's going on. No one is innocent here. Everyone plays a role in this poo-fest that goes on. Conservatives get spat on a lot here, and like most people they tend to generalize their attackers as the "liberal posters" not the "8 liberal posters that act like asses towards me". When you get attacked, you tend to want to defend, kinda c'mon sense...and after getting hit hard enough times, guess what, you'll hit back, often using the same kind of tactics as your enemy.

What I see from thumbs is payback. Basso....is more interesting and I think it goes beyond this board - he came in here with a chip on his shoulder.

I love the irony of this whole situation.

Footage comes out of woman being racist against whites.

Outrage in media. People call NAACP racist for letting this happen. NAACP reacts by condemning woman. Obama - often accused of taking too long to take action, gets rid of the person.

Later - it comes out that the source had doctored the clip to make her appear racist and that she indeed had actually acted admirably. Media attacks NAACP and Obama for not getting all the facts and ruining woman's life.

So...the person who created the video and slandered this poor woman gets off free without any criticism. The media which picked up a false story takes no accountability for reporting a lie.

But the NAACP and Obama are attacked for believing the media and not considering that the source could be manipulating the video to ruin the woman's life.

Wow...makes perfect sense to me. Whoever made that video is brilliant - no matter what, he gets to attack the NAACP and Obama. It's a win-win for him and his agenda.

This is what I meant earlier by if you drag people to the deep end you might get drowned.

Your argument here is one that you have dragged to the point of absurdity. Yes the NAACP exist because of racism. It exist to combat racism. No one is saying that racism is permissible. That why your argument is so off base.

Again though if you are saying then it makes it the same as the KKK then clearly then similar absurdities can be used to the Tea Party. For example the Tea Party and the FARC are the same since Socialism is important to both and both make money off of Socialism.

But to follow your own absurd logic let me ask you do you agree there are people who are in the Tea Party because they do not like that there is a black president? Or in the case of what we have seen from many Tea Party rallies the belief, although mistaken, that we have a Muslim president?

If so then do you think that those people who hold that belief are giving money to the Tea Party?

Now I am willing to accept that those people are a distinct minority of the Tea Party, at least the ones who are specifically upset about a black president, but at the same time as those people do exist and are giving money under absurd reasoning that you are championing the Tea Party is making money off of racism.

Sure but who doesn't get attacked here every now and then. One problem I see with some of conservative posters (and some of the liberals) is that they seem to have very narrow focus and see this board in purely an us vs. them view. This board isn't like that as we discuss a range of controversial issues and while some might be aligned on one topic might be very opposed in another. For example politically I am fairly close to Grizzled but we have had some knock down drag out debates in regard to Evolution.

Also this forgets that within the range of politics there are very differing views among those who are considered conservative or liberal, for instance myself and Major are considered liberal compared to Basso and OddsOn but we have very different views from say FB and Rimrocker and have had some tough debates with them and even with each other. Heck during the 2008 elections I was very hard on Major regarding Obama and vice versa.

I'm not going to psychoanalize them.

I agree it is a sad situation and as I noted in the other thread that I find it galling for Breitbart to play the innocent here. Whether Breitbart cared or not about Sherrod brown clearly he knew that that speech wasn't about racism but he went ahead and edited it to misrepresent her views. Even if she wasn't her target unless he is a complete idiot he has to know that she is going to be slandered by it. This was callous on his part and he bears much responsibility.

That said the NAACP, Admin and Vilsack should've known better. Breitbart is a provocateur and its their fault for overreacting to such provocation. Instead of approaching this calmly and looking at the facts before condemning Sherrod they over reacted.

But here's the funny thing, the views coming out from Basson and OddsOn are actual views of real Americans. There are lots of people who think that way. And as weird and incredulous at times I am at what they post, i try to keep in mind that people actually do think this way and if I have any idealism whatsoever left in my cynical soul - I better try to understand WHERE and WHY that comes from.

Well, you can say trying to understand where they are coming from is "psychoanalyzing" them, but I still think that's better than just judging them dismissively.

Of course there are plenty of real Americans who share their views obviously the popularity of the Tea Party proves that. Though this is less of a problem with their views than with their styles.

This is exactly the issue I have with basso/etc. It seems like it's simply their job to criticize Dems and defend the GOP with very few exceptions. They like to act like they are doing the same thing as the other side, but the reality is that the other side actually debates policy merits and disagrees both with each other and with Congress and/or the Admin. You also see that with the good conservative posters here. But then there are the crazies who just act like the Iraqi information minister and really add zero value to the discussion.

When we retreat from the absurdity posed, let's look at your statement that the NAACP "exists because of racism. It exists to combat racism."

As I have previously stated, the NAACP's genesis was a positive and they achieved commendable goals. Granted, their stated goals are still the same, but the NAACP uses racism to achieve them. Can that be good? I don't think so, but you might disagree.

My general premise is that ridding ourselves of racism en toto is the only way to achieve racial peace, i.e., when no one even thinks about it (Orwellian methodology but in a nice way) let alone uses it for ill ... or perceived good.
