I actually think the NAACP should take a more conservative agenda of self improvement in the community. Not totally drop their liberal agenda, just focus a little more on self improvement.

To my knowledge, members of the NAACP have never...

    Lynched a white person
Burned a cross on a white person's lawn
Burned down churches frequented by white people
    Intimidated whites into avoiding voting
Forced blacks and whites to vote for a particular political party

Get back to me when the NAACP does anything but advance the cause of African Americans.

I'm not sure what you mean by "original thought stream". The original article was about the Tea Party taking conrol of their message something that I as the OP was praising them for.

In fact looking at the first page of the thread you were the one who brought up the KKK.

Except that completely ignores history. Again that would be like saying that the Republican Party is like the Nazi party since both seek to run a government. Its such a narrow subset as to be a practically irrelevant comparison.

As far as your view of the NAACP consider this. Ben Jealous just wrote in regard to Shirley Sherrod,
[rquoter]In the statement, NAACP President Benjamin Todd Jealous said the organization was "appalled by her actions, just as we are with abuses of power against farmers of color and female farmers."

"Her actions were shameful. While she went on to explain in the story that she ultimately realized her mistake, as well as the common predicament of working people of all races, she gave no indication she had attempted to right the wrong she had done to this man," he said.

"The reaction from many in the audience is disturbing. We will be looking into the behavior of NAACP representatives at this local event and take any appropriate action," Jealous said.

He thanked the people who had brought Sherrod's remarks to the attention of the NAACP's national office.

"Sherrod's behavior is even more intolerable in light of the U.S. Department of Agriculture's well documented history of denying opportunities to African American, Latino, Asian American, and Native American farmers, as well as female farmers of all races," Jealous said. "Currently, justice for many of these farmers is being held up by Congress."[/rquoter]

It sounds like they are taking a pretty tough stance on racism.

interesting that self-help is viewed as "illiberal" w/in some quarters of the black community.

I think this does illustrate one of the problems with the Tea Party. This is a thread that started out as complementary to the Tea Party yet a poster who is an avowed member and probably the most vocal supporter on this forum has instead chosen to derail this thread by putting forward an extremist and preposterous analogy to go after the NAACP.

So instead of a discussion about what is going right with the Tea Party he has put himself on the defensive of defending his preposterous analogy and moved the thread to a discussion of the NAACP.

First, thanks for an intelligent reply. However, I believe in empowering the disadvantaged, as you pointed out, but separating the minorities into their respective races only serves to divide rather than unite.

I agree "there's still immense tension between whites and blacks in this country - immense" -- but organizations like the NAACP and Klan thrive ... and feed ... on that tension. My younger sister's dog emits a distressed yelp if someone other than her approaches it. The NAACP is the same way, so no one in disagreement even wants to approach it.

I sincerely believe that the membership continues to rely on the same race crutch because they fear they will lose relevancy and, ultimately, funding. That in a nutshell is why I compare them to the KKK -- without racism they will die as an organization.

Non-sequitur ... typical for your lack of a rational thought process.

Yet, like Jones, you cannot articulate your objection -- you just object. My challenge is you is to open my eyes. So far you have done nothing to do that except whimper over the truth of what I wrote. Sweet Lou 4 2 has done a splendid job, but you have done nothing.

What is the mindset of the average tea bagger? I communicate with advocates every day of the week and I still don't know because the opinions are so varied. Have you ever noticed that I refer to tea parties in the plural -- because there are so fixed platforms like the major parties. There is general agreement on issues like government over-spending and love of country, but there are disagreements on forms of taxation, education and healthcare / insurance. I spend much of my time on the dialogue among advocates.

Ditto with the tea parties, except for standing in front of a polling place menacing voters with a club. Get back to me when the tea paries do anything but advance the cause of the American people as a whole.

BTW, I see no difference in comparing the NAACP with the KKK as you do in comparing the tea parties with the KKK. You don't like the first, but the second is okay.

Dear Crite -- I respond with civility to civil posts and with vitriol to vitriolic posts. Like Jones, vlaurio and I have a history of which you may not be aware in your new role of championing the "downtrodden."

I would never compare the TEA Party (any of them) and the KKK. That's what you get for making assumptions.

Keep in mind that I was defending you earlier in this thread until you went off the deep end.

The KKK comparison devolved from this exchange:

edwardc: hum maybe the naacp was right there are racist in the tea party.

thumbs: Maybe there are more racists in the NAACP than in any other organization outside the KKK. Hmmm, maybe these two groups have become mirror images of each other.

I was combatting the original innuendo with just as unfair innuendo of my own to show the villany of making such a remark excused by a "maybe." The game started from there.

You are correct, and I appreciate the original support. When dueling with multiple posters, to my great regret, I sometimes start shooting at everything that moves outside my fortifications. CaseyH was a good example of that a week or two ago. However, going into the deep end challenges adversaries to explore deeper waters themselves.

So you decided to challenge what you felt was an unfair innuendo by making a even more unfair comparison.

This is why these type of discussions break down into acrimony.
