Super Bowl XLVIII: Seattle Seahawks vs. Denver Broncos

How are the Saints the 4th best team this year when they couldn't even win their division?

 

Umm what?? Just because Denver crapped the bed last night doesn't mean you should discount what an incredible season they had. They pretty much dominated their way to the Super Bowl, and broke all kinds of crazy records in the process. And where on Earth did the Saints come from?? The Panthers were clearly the better team in that division let alone in the league. I'm not sure if you're suggesting that the Niners would have dismantled Denver the same way by saying that the Broncos were a distant third, but I think that would have been a MUCH closer game than what we saw last night. I'm not denying that SF wasn't a good team, but NOBODY saw last night coming.....not even the Seahawks. It was just the perfect storm of controlled chaos and ineptitude.

 

Denver didn't crap the bed. Seattle shut them down completely. When you have that much pressure on your QB and your receivers get tackled immediately even if they do happen to catch the ball then you're going to have a hard time scoring points.

One could say the Denver defense let them down, but the Seahawks had field position all night.

 

Panthers/Saints, whatever. NFC is clearly superior to the AFC.

 

The Broncos didn't adjust to either point you just noted.

The Seahawk defenders were so disciplined and tackled so well. And the coaches had the players in the right zones on the field, executing excellent fundamentals. It was amazing to see.

The Broncos receivers were not catching and immediately trying to get upfield, by either running or falling that direction. Anytime they tried to catch and curl/spin for extra yardage, they went down and many times actually lost yardage after the catch.

And that Bronco offensive line/protection scheme was overmatched. Manning isn't gonna make plays/pick up yards with his feet, so without protection and with the receivers being jammed hard, there was no hope for the Broncos. Their timing wasn't just disrupted, it was annihilated. The Seahawks knew that without protection or receivers, Manning was not a threat, especially once they had the Broncos in must pass mode. The fist play from scrimmage told the tale. Football is a team game.

The Seahawk offense wasn't that impressive. They tried some high risk/high reward plays. Wilson did nothing too amazing. He played within himself and took no unnecessary risks. He just made safe, smart plays with his feet and arm, keeping the ball moving, converting up 3rd downs. It took experimenting with, what, 3 QBs, before hitting on Wilson.

I was pulling for Pete Carroll. I like his style of coaching, personality, and how he relates to and treats his players. He had his team well-schemed and well-prepared.

 

For once I actually agree with that dbag. Niners came within a bonehead mistake from Kap away from winning in Seattle. Broncos got housed on a neutral site.

An assistant coach, Marquand Manuel, comes over and greets Sherman with a smile, congratulating him. Almost immediately they start speaking another language. Digs, crossers and seams are the new patois. They laugh upon rediscovering the moment in XLVIII when they knew they were “playing chess, not checkers,” as Sherman tells it.

“A good offense that has really studied film and really done its due diligence will see plays that other teams have had success with and install them as a surprise,” Sherman says. “Brandon Browner got beat in Arizona on posts from two outside receivers, and flats from the slot receivers. And they were the only team that ran it. Kam was the safety and he tried to undercut the post and they just banged it in there. Denver had never run it, and they put it in because of Arizona. That’s chess.”

Broncos were out coached, out-schemed, and out prepared. Seahawks made all the right adjustments.

 

It's not a strong statement at all, however true it is. You didn't even remember the previous black QBs that won superbowl rings. Why? Because they didn't do much (if anything, really) to help their team get to the superbowl and win.

I'm not arguing that it's not a legitimate statement - Tavaris Jackson is indeed a superbowl winning QB. It's great that he won. But when discussions arise of black QBs winning superbowls, Jackson is going to be a footnote.

 

If someone asked for a summary of how the game went, you could just point them to the first play of the first half, and the first play of the second half lol.
