I don't understand why we have to use just one defensive scheme for every team. Can't they play good honest D against teams that don't have elite off the dribble shooters and then go back to switch everything against the Warriors? Then maybe a hybrid defense with some switches but a big in the middle for teams with elite pick and roll. They don't have to make the switch everything defense their entire defensive identity just because that works best against GSW.

to switch your big out onto the perimeter you need 2 things:

    1) a big who can defend guards
    2) forwards to can protect the rim

the loss of luc and ariza's wingspans make it difficult to protect the rim when capela switches out. tucker still does a good job but ennis, gerald, house, and clark haven't been able to protect the rim.

if we bring in a forward via trade or buyout signing that can cover the rim we'll go back to full switching.

You still need to balance offense and defense. I know you are pushing for a big who can shoot, but Capela’s ability to catch and finish in traffic is truly elite and creates driving lanes during a pick and roll just as much as clearing out the center to 15-20 feet does. Qi simply cannot catch and finish like that, and isn’t a good enough shooter to demand attention when cleared out (he’s jump shoot and 3-pointer is entirely theoretical stateside).

Unless you want an even more static and 3-heavy offense, you need Clint or a similarly skilled center in there. And only Jordan is in the same ballpark and he’s not going anywhere given Mav’s start. Vuvecik is an entirely different player, and also not available.

Are we currently losing out of defense? Yes, a bit. But Qi is nowhere near ready to contribute offensively (and is unproven defensively in the NBA). And the others aren’t available and are questionable upgrades at best.

We all know you yearn for a jump shooting 7-footer. But a) we don’t have one, b) there isn’t one available, and c) Capela’s finishing ability is just as rare and just as valuable.

Vucevic is a defensive liability no matter where you hide him. It would be layup drills like going against Kanter. Terrible idea

How can you promote DJ and dog on Capela? They have nearly identical games, but one is a) younger b) a better FT shooter. Terrible idea

For someone who feigns taking an unbiased objective approach you seem to have some real emotional baggage here...

Totally agree. This is what the Warriors do. They use guys like Damian Jones, Looney and give them major minutes alongside a guy like Jerebko during the regular season against 90% of the league that they know they can beat. And then in the playoffs and maybe occasionally throughout the regular season in certain situations they run Iggy out there with the starters and they then minimize the minutes of the ancillary guys. And they adjust their defense accordingly. They're not using Durant to defend bigs or making him switch all the time. Only when necessary to win.

And agree here as well. You've got to have the right pieces to switch. And we don't have that right now. Clark is a nice add. But he's like Looney or Jones on the Warriors. He can eat minutes if we've got the other guys.....that we don't have. Ennis isn't the answer. We need a new Ariza and Luc and we'll be great again. And......Clark might actually turn into Luc when we get our new Ariza.

Agreed. They need to be more adaptable. I get it they want to switch so it is "second nature" when defending GSW. But first you have to GET to be in the position to play GSW.

    Need to be more adaptable.

Our coaches aren't dumb. They do this stuff for a living. They have to be seeing what we are all seeing. Even the national color analysts see what teams are doing to our switching defense.

There has to be something going in behind the scenes that keeps our coaches from adjusting. I have no idea what it is but I don't believe that they don't notice what is so obvious to everyone else.

I just hope that it isn't statistics that is keeping them from changing. Sometimes the numbers can be misleading or misinterpreted. This is a situation where the coaches would need to tell Daryl to stick his numbers up his ass and make the adjustment.

Midrange 2s aren't bad shots. Switching everything isnt the best solution for every opponent. Isolation offense leads to unhappy role players who get uninspired standing around watching harden dribble.

Step up coaches. Analytics are good but experience playing the game and understanding human emotions is even more important. Numbers dont tell that side of the story unless Daryl has an emotional index by placing sensors on all of the players or something.
