ahhhhh eventually got the windows update to properly install and then the sasser removal tool all fixed think the whole uni got hit
I installed a firewall. I had downloaded the patch from Microsoft.com at work and burned it to a CD. I installed the patch from the CD after I got home last night, and everything works fine now.
For those of y'all who don't know, I work at Symantec. Everyone was real suprised by how quick the turnaround was between Microsoft making the vulnerability public and this worm getting spread. I guess the Window is going to continue to get smaller and smaller. For whatever it's worth, our customer's were unaffected if they did a LiveUpdate, since the fix was available, but it's still suprising how fast the exploit came out. My only recommendation is to always download those Microsoft updates when they pop up and make sure you have some kind of Anti-Virus software installed and updated. Heh... actually I'm happy cause Symantec stock shot up when this virus hit.
ok im really confused here. i got a email saying that i needed to update my files for windows. so i clicked on the link and started the process. my computer then froze and i restarted and then went into a loop. well then i had to do a system restore and now have my computer up and running. although my graphic settings are set too the lowest option. and i cant seem to set them higher. well now i went to the actual windows website and it appears that i need the updates and the site looks the same as the one i went to on the email. which at first i thought was a fake site and downloaded a virus on my computer. i think i need the updates but i feel if i do then i will have to start the whole process over again. anyone know what i should do, and also how do i fix my graphic settings? thanks
a big piece of advice here..... Microsoft will NEVER...let me repeat that....NEVER EVER send you email to tell you to update.... If you ever get a email telling you it is time to update windows....I guarantee that it is a scam/fake/virus time....if you ever get a email telling you that some company/website has lost your information (login/password)....it is a FAKE...dont fall for stuff like this... now...with that out of the way. pele....do you know what video card you have? I assume you are using XP...what does it show in your display properties? (ie...card/monitor/color depth/resolution) and on updates....the only way you should do your updates is thru the Windows Update applet in your Control Panel.....it will take yotu to the official correct update site and walk you thru the process....
the actual email was from my dsl provider (sbc yahoo) telling me that i should update my computer. thats probably why i didnt think twice when i clicked on it. my videocard is nvidia geforce2 MX 100/200. the cursor on the bar to increase resolution wont move over to the "more" side. doesnt make much sense to me.
I just got a popup saying Sasser detected, so I downloaded Stinger and it found nothing. Any other ideas? DD
your video driver is corrupted. Go to the Nvidia site and get the newest driver package. this should be the one you need.... http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_56.72 I guess I could revise my statement to say that no one(not a company anyway) will send you a link to a update via email....they may suggest to you to update in whatever fashion your computer uses...but to actually send a link is highly irregular in my experience.
Rockets2K thank you man, the link worked. yeah as soon as my computer froze up i realized how stupid it was to use that link i at least learned my lesson though. i guess ill click on that good samaritan thread now and leave a post for rox2k.
Man this this thread seriously help me out. My laptop was acting really strange tonight and i really needed to type an exam in the morning. I was starting to panic because I thought i wouldnt fix it in time and would have to write a 4hr exam by hand. I came home and went to the trusty CF.net and problem solved with little pain.
