Uhhhhh dude, you know what the Tenderloin District has always been, right?

And you think it's "strange" now?

I look forward to the next ATW Discovers SF: Castro Edition; Season 3 will be Haight-Ashbury

The Tenderloin has always been really bad.

Having said that - while I do believe some of the issues in San Francisco are being exaggerated, the reality is that the city has an issue with drug users and the amount of homeless in the area is hurting the viability of the town.

There are a number of reasons for it - the lack of housing in San Francisco, the fact that San Francisco and Los Angeles have exceptional resources for the homeless compared to most of the USA - the weather and the lack of aggressive policing that is common in other towns like Chicago and Boston that push the homeless away.

What I suspect we will see happen is that there will be a backlash by voters and we will start seeing the homeless aggressively pushed out of San Francisco, we will see the return of arresting for petty drug use and theft and we will see more aggressive policing that will discourage theft.

San Francisco is an example of the complexities of homelessness and the causes ...... it isn't for the reasons espoused by the Right, and the Left acts like it doesn't exist.

The road to hell is paved with good intentions.... what makes San Francisco so appealing to people is also part of why it has such a petty crime and homeless issue.

A whole bunch of businesses have closed down in San Francisco

Los Angeles has lots of homeless on skid row but their businesses are safer cause LAPD still has a reputation
    @basso

@AroundTheWorld was recently there and there were lots of closed stores and restaurants

there’s also lots of videos of closed stores and Barkley was accurate ‘homeless crooks’

nobody closed the Beverly center in LA
    But

    This is insane.

No - Moscow is not nicer than any city in the USA or the West.

    This is a troll job.

Like 25% of children in Moscow are BELOW the poverty line.

Moscow is possibly the most corrupt major city in the world, and that extends all the way down to basic police officers and inspectors.

Domestic violence and rape is very high - as is drug use and theft.

Utilities often are not dependable and when they do work they are some of the most expensive in the world.

In Moscow the cost of just food is 1/3 of all income - highest in Europe.

Alcoholism and drug addiction is extremely common in Moscow.

The roads are crumbling, there isn't sufficient doctors or medical care, the housing is falling apart.

Moscow doesn't even keep accurate numbers on a lot of things, so we do not even know for sure.

    Air quality is horrendous.

The Soviets at least had strong mandatory schooling and respect for human capital, which isn't the case anymore.

When I see **** like this from Tucker Carlson I know he is trolling - and it is dangerous.

No - Moscow is not doing well, and no Russia is not doing well at all...... it is falling apart.

I don't disagree with this - but I will add that the homeless situation and drug issues in Los Angeles are a REAL issue and are hurting the city. What I don't agree with is this idea that it is the fault of San Francisco and Los Angeles that there are homeless....

In the context of San Francisco, I'd say the right largely attributes its problems to:
    • Lack of funding/empowerment of law enforcement
    • Lax drug laws
    • Lax penalties for property crimes
Trying to boil San Francisco's problems down to a right/left dichotomy is lazy. There isn't any land in the city to develop and everything is astronomically expensive. Even if San Francisco did away with its left-leaning development laws, the NIMBYs would rally around a new justification to prevent more housing from being built. Why? Because, in the US (and especially place's like SF), personal wealth is disproportionality tied up with housing. Somebody whose net worth depends on housing scarcity in San Francisco isn't going to support a construction boom.

talking specifically of homelessness, not the wealth of other problems associated with homelessness. what does the right espouse as the cause of homelessness in SF?

also note, there is effectively no "right" wing in SF. sure, there are some old blue bloods in Nob Hill, but the modern, Trump/MAGA republicans? n'existe pas in SF.
