He uses very high quality psychological tactics. From what I've seen:

1. He tries to make you think he agrees with your positions, to get you to open up.
2. He often plays a foreign, clumsy-English speaking simpleton to elicit sympathy from others, which leads people to do things to agree with him, in order to prevent them from looking like they're rude to this "simpleton".
3. He gets people to agree to fairly moderate positions, and then gets them more and more extreme.
4. He really gets into it once the agreement begins, egging you on by getting excited and laughing at times. This leads the other person to continue down the road.

...and then of course the fact that he has a big budget to this lends credibility to his efforts, through nice hotels, car services, professional camera crews, etc.

 

That has been my tactic here since 1998.

 

None of these apply to the mosque clip but good attempt at trying to defend your like-minded peers.

doubtful. the anti-muslim bias seems to come entirely from the right and specifically, from trump supporters. that being said, how do we know those people are all "conservatives"?

hatred and gullibility seem to go hand in hand and this group was so blinded by their hatred of muslims (and clintons) that they couldnt see what was really going on. thats on them...not cohen or "the liberal".
