Not as a player... http://blog.chron.com/ultimateastros/2013/01/07/roger-clemens-on-verge-of-taking-active-role-with-houston-astros/ Seven-time Cy Young winner Roger Clemens is on the verge of taking an active role with the Astros. Clemens is scheduled to meet next Monday with Houston general manager Jeff Luhnow. The Astros plan to open their 2013 schedule to Clemens, allowing him to participate as much as he wants to during spring training and the regular season. Houston owner Jim Crane and pitching coach Doug Brocail are fully on board with the move, which would see Clemens take a role he’s often hinted at since retiring in 2007. “We’ve got the whole calendar mapped out and we’re going to sort of figure out what makes sense,” Luhnow said Monday. “But the idea is to plug him in in spring training, plug him in throughout the season, and just have him get a lot more involved with our pitchers.” Luhnow said the rebuilding Astros are excited about the possibility of adding Clemens, who’s appearing on the Hall of Fame ballot this year for the first time. Crane hinted at the end of the 2012 season Clemens — who briefly pitched for the Sugar Land Skeeters — could join the Astros’ rotation. But Clemens made it clear in mid-October during a gala for Houston announcer Milo Hamilton his professional pitching days were done. “So far all indications are he’s eager to participate, eager to help our young pitchers, and certainly there’s a lot of (acceptance) on our side to get him involved,” Luhnow said. “So, yeah, we’re moving ahead.” He added: “A lot of the things we teach … a lot of the things we want our pitchers to model themselves after, Roger’s the perfect example of them. So it’s great when you can produce him in the flesh and he can talk about his experiences.”
He is gonna be paid to be a marketing tool...and thats most likely what the new mgmt really wants him for...
the cynicism here is ridiculous. does anyone truly think one of the best pitchers in the history of MLB doesn't have something to teach young pitchers? the term "roid rage" applies more to fans and sports writers than to the cheaters who used them, methinks.
I don't think being a HOF pitcher *necessarily* makes you helpful to young pitchers. You can't teach talent - so if what you accomplished was on sheer talent, then you didn't necessarily need to do what other players have to do to be successful. Generically, a guy like Shane Reynolds that had to outsmart and outwork other players probably makes for a better teacher for other players with mediocre talent. That's why Adam Everett is a great instructor - what he did wasn't based on sheer athleticism or other things that simply can't be taught. It was from sound fundamentals and extracting every ounce of performance out of limited physical talent. It's just like Lebron James isn't going to be able to help teach other NBA players necessarily, because they physically can't do the things that makes him successful. What those guys CAN teach is work ethic, etc - but that's where Clemens is tainted by steroids. Part of his work ethic was cheating.
Or, looked at another way, they reduce the amount of work you have to do to reach the same results as someone else who doesn't use them.
They may decrease the time it takes, but you still have to do the work. Users can excercise so much more frequently.
did you? this thread was dripping with cynicism at the time. posts 4, 6, and 7 specifically. good point. I don't see the roid thing quite as much of a taint on his work ethic as you do, but I see where you're coming from.
Instructor, I guess... <blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p>Houston @<a href="https://twitter.com/astros">astros</a> GM @<a href="https://twitter.com/jluhnow">jluhnow</a> tells me: @<a href="https://twitter.com/rogerclemens">rogerclemens</a> will be much more hands-on with minor, major-leaguers, including spring training</p>— SteveBuninCSN (@SteveBunin) <a href="https://twitter.com/SteveBunin/status/290896276353056768" data-datetime="2013-01-14T19:00:51+00:00">January 14, 2013</a></blockquote> <script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>
Does hands-on mean he will personally be injecting them with HGH and other stuff? lol Remove the middle man; he's just a snitch in waiting.
To understand Roger Clemens, you have to trace his success back to his early days when he was honing his craft. <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/voERbIjoLJ0?list=PLE8CB6018D2CC46E7" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
