Hopefully no one has posted this yet. If they have, appologies. Rockets snatch up Mavericks' Adrian Griffin By JONATHAN FEIGEN Copyright 2003 Houston Chronicle Facing Friday's deadline to match the offer to keep James Posey or lose him to the Grizzlies, the Rockets reached a deal today with another defensive-minded small forward, free agent Adrian Griffin, a person familiar with the talks said. Griffin, a veteran of four NBA seasons out of Seton Hall, averaged 4.4 points per game on 43.3 percent shooting for the Mavericks last season. Known more as a strong defender at small forward and guard, Griffin started 48 games for the Mavericks last season. His best season might have been the 2001-2002 season, his first with the Mavericks, when he averaged 7.2 points per game on 49.9 percent shooting. Griffin, 29, was a Continental Basketball Association MVP and CBA Finals MVP in 1999 before becoming a surprise success with the Celtics the next season. He played three CBA seasons and a season in Italy before his breakthrough with the Celtics.
Thank god! At least now we have a young, defensive minded SF to start for us! This is great for the Rockets.
Not bad. I think he is just a tad slow, but is powerful enough to defend the 3's that like to work the post.
If acquiring this oft-cut journeyman (starter? ) is great news, well, then the Posey deal looks worse and worse every day. In other news, Juaquin Hawkins' agent just bought him a plane ticket to Manila.
Not a bad move at all! Position: G-F Born: 07/04/74 Height: 6-5 / 1,96 Weight: 230 lbs. / 104,3 kg. College: Seton Hall '96
Oft cut? he's been in like 4 years and only changed teams from Celts to Mavs previously, htf does that make him a journeyman? If we are going to lose Posey which is clearly a given at this point then I will take AG. I would have prefered Posey of course.
If they dont have to give up somebody(except for Moochie), not a bad pick up for Rox. Griffin was a tough defender when he played for Mavs. However, since he is not a good scorer like Posey, how to balance the offense power is another question for JVG. Remember last year Rox was one of the lowest score per game team. I have no doubt the Rox defense will even better this season, but look from offense perspective, I expect a lot of 70-80 pts games.
if we paid more than league minimum and signed him for more than one year, i'm kinda pissed. sure, he's a decent defensive player but can he shoot beyond 15 feet? From the times I've seen him, the answer is no. If we're signing him to be the freaking starter, that's a mistake. If we're signing him to fill a roster spot, that's fine.
What do you prefer? Stop-gap? Temp? Guess what, in Basketball, and when you've played in three leagues before you're thirty, you pretty much have your picture in the dictionary next to journeyman.
Oh, and if this comes at 1/3rd the price of Posey + adding Pike we've done well. We have solidified our backup positions at the 2, 3, 4, & 5. Now to do something about Moochie, get a true starting SF, and get a rebounding PF. Hmmmmmmm...
