Could you please elaborate on what "way better player" can the Rockets realistically acquire with Shumpert and 2 first round picks?
https://www.basketball-reference.co...gton&y2=2019&player_id2=covinro01&idx=players Very similar stats. Justise played about 5 minutes less per game and played nearly twice the number of games. Winslow is 6 years younger and has no lingering injuries. Covington definitely has the height and even wingspan bonus but he's not getting any younger just as Winslow is not getting taller or longer. Covington has shown he produces on new teams in a pretty similar fashion. Maybe Winslow needs a change of scenery to break out? Maybe not but he's more likely to take that leap than a 29 year old Covington. Maybe Winslow will learn benefit from having actual threats on the perimeter? He's never played next to a star much less two all time great point guards.
Why not get both? Paul Rivers Harden Green Winslow House Covington Tucker Capela Chandler 1. Help Miami get Westbrook while poaching Winslow. OKC In: Dragic, SnT Shumpert (13M non-guaranteed), 1 FRP Rockets, 2 FRP Miami Miami In: Westbrook Rockets In: Winslow 2. Trade for Covington. Wolves In: Gordan and a non protected First Rockets In: RoCo 3. Sign Tyson Chandler with part MLE
The player may not exist right now as an option. I think we'd be overpaying giving that haul. Rockets would be better off waiting than doing that deal. Maybe some sort of star becomes available at some point. PG13 deal came out of nowhere this week. I know the Rockets didn't have a chance at getting George, but I used that as an example to show that this league is fluid, and things change fast. We also don't know if Morey has something lined up for Capela. That could really change where the Rockets are thin in the future. I'd rather the Rockets give even more for a more proven player than give up half of our assets for Winslow. I'm not knocking Winslow at all, I just think he's not worth 2 1sts and a large expiring. This situation is similar to overpaying now for a player, or wait to see if the buyout market gives us a good player on the cheap later in the season.
That's even better we could save MLE for later in the year to pick up buyouts or to match cash in a bigger trade. The small ball rotation would be dangerous! Morey get the lines hot!
The problem is the way the league is trending to playing more like the Rockets decent tall wing 3 and D players are going to cost more and more. We all know Rockets can't afford to pay anyone. We are lucky to have House playing as good as he does.
