Really shocking to me. He was a great running back and he is only 28 years old. Vikings lose a great player on the offense.

Hasn't he had scores of knee problems in the past?

I think he did it so he could go to med school. He's always said he had planned on going to grad school to become a medical researcher. I can't imagine that a guy whose interests include calculus, molecular genetics and classical music would find many like-minded people in the NFL.

Wow. I never knew that about him, Jeff. That would be one hell of a career move that hopefully gets a lot of publicity... especially for the young brats.

As a Vikings fan, you always knew he might hang up the boots a little early cause of his off field desires, especially to be a Dr, but 28 is just ridiculous, great to see though, except for the fact he just had a career year.

Smith is going to be undergoing his third knee surgery in the near future. This was the first season he played all 16 games and the last 5 games (including playoffs) were not very productive - a combination of his knee problem and the Vikings getting blown out in 4 of those games.

I hope Robert Smith does well in whatever he pursues after football. I've always liked him as a player, and he seems to be a good person.

Robert Smith is one of the most intelligent people around. He has wanted to go to medical school, but he may have other business ventures as well.
He is also very well-spoken, so don't be surprised to see him on TV.

The only complaint I ever had against Smith was a seemingly hypocritical episode while he was still in college. He chose to boycott some practices because they were interfering with his school work. He felt he wasn't able to devote enough time to his studies. A very noble gesture. He then turned around and left school after his Junior year to go to the NFL. Perhaps I am being nitpicky, since he did eventually graduate, but at the time it smacked of hypocrisy.

If he didn't actually leave school, but just cut back his classes so he could get a job, how is that hipocritical?

    Artificial turf claims another victim!!

If you have to scrub it with a brush, then you should NOT play sports on it!!

I concur. This whole leaving school to play
a sport is bad thing is BS. Hell maybe Bill
Gates should have finished college to. Waited
and let someone else jump on HIS Opportunity.
