This was inevitable, and their demise was a shame nonetheless. Huge part of my childhood, they had so many really great writers. Frank DeFord was a national treasure; I need to go check out his archives at UT.
print media, including newspapers, all but gone. Next will be games on over the air TV (only the NFL really still holding on to that, along with some other league's playoff games). Then the cable networks will stop showing sports and it will all be streaming. Then we'll be following the "play by play" via twitter posts. Honestly, this BBS format is already outdated yet still seems "fresh".
The photos in SI were fantastic. Iconic pics of Lakers v. Celtics in the 80s and of MJ throughout his career.
I can't remember how old I was, 13ish or so, when I learned that the swimsuit issue existed because someone brought one to school, and at the same realized that my dad had been stealing them the whole time.
Wow, what logic, what comprehensive analysis. Step 1: something I didn't like happened. Step 2: something bad happened to the people who did something I didn't like Step 3: reason that Step 1 caused Step 2. Step 4: Keep brain turned to OFF and keep posting vapid tweets. Forbes, from 2018, before the "horror" of a trans person "ruined" the cover of SI. https://www.theringer.com/2018/4/11/17220176/sports-illustrated-future-meredith-sale-history
SI is the only print edition sports magazine that I've ever subscribed to. That said, I'm not sentimental about their demise at all because it slipped into complete irrelevance a long time ago. But I must admit looking back now at some of the covers from the 70s and 80s brings back a lot of memories and emotions.
NCAA tournament games did well over the air this last year. I want NOTHING about the tournament to change until I’m dead lol
Of course... but 3 of the 4 games at any given time are on cable, and they were one of the first major events to create their own streaming platform that is accessible to everybody via pc/laptop/mobile device. There's not much preventing them from just offering it exclusively via the app if the networks don't feel the juice is worth the squeeze anymore... it will ultimately be a network decision for all of this going forward.
Should've guessed you'd go the moron route and blame their demise on that. This is a long time coming. I'm surprised they held on this long.
