Bro, I have no idea who that even was.... All of Brown's dunks were mid, Cam Whitmore should have gone...
Jaylen Brown, Boston Celtics Grade: B- Result: Runner-up Analysis The judging panel seemed more enamored of Brown's dunks than outside observers were. He reached the finals with a dunk which saw him take a lob from teammate Jayson Tatum and jump over a sitting Kai Cenat (filming for his popular YouTube channel) in what was intended as a tribute to Dee Brown, who won the 1991 dunk contest for the Boston Celtics. Alas, Brown's effort to cover his eyes as Dee Brown famously did on his final dunk came only after the ball had gone through the net. A couple of Brown's dunks, including a pump followed by a windmill that scored a 48.8 and a 360 windmill that scored a 48.6, were the kind occasionally seen during game action. Brown did stir emotions with the latter dunk by paying tribute to the late Terrence Clarke, a Kentucky star who died in a car accident while preparing for the 2021 draft. Brown has called Clarke, who was from the Boston area, "my little brother."
Yeah easily the worst. Even MacClung was like **** you guys, if you penalize me for missing. Judges ruined it, but that's nothing new. To be fair, the whole neon-esque lighting didn't help the whole thing. And the atmosphere is just zero. Didn't they used to play some music at least before the dunk. All these tributes and influencers water this **** down even more in my opinion. They also didn't even show the first dunk by Brown on the replay which had the whole event because they were showing the judges and the Celtics court only appeared, just like the hand in front of Brown's eyes, after the dunk. They can do more with these courts you would think. It was nice for the skills challenge, funny for 3pt-contest, but these generic squares with some animation and pixelated stars where they walk just didn't add anything for me. Oh and Reggie & Kenny just bickering is getting really old...really really ****ing old. From the 3pt contest between Curry and Sabrina to the judges messing up. We get it, it was stupid, but it's not like they called out Wade for cheating that year in Chicago / Miami. So just move on. Every dunk the commentary was not hype because of the comparison to that 1st Mac dunk and how the judges will rule it.
Didn’t they do HORSE one year as one of the events? Like maybe the pandemic year? Somebody should have tried to dunk of Wemby. I liked the rising stars games. The parts that I watched. The underdogs embarrassing Wemby and was moderately exciting though nobody on NBA team appeared to give a crap. It would be nice if the nba/players came to treat the AS game as part of the season — part of their contract . They’re being monetarily compensated for making the team. They can be injured at any time of an 82+ game season. What’s one more game? they should also consider rewarding the conference with HCA for finals for winning the game. as for dunk contest, this would never fly, but how amazing would it be if the best shot blockers challenged the dunkers and you had to dunk on someone? Id rather see those attempts than the same stuff we’ve been seeing for the last 20 years. Cant imagine defenders volunteering the get posterized but would be such an amazing event.
While that would be awesome for the dunk contest as you said it would never happen. Not just because of the fact nobody is signing up to get dunked on but also because of the injury risk
It's prob a grueling process prreparing for the dunk contest you spend all day hopping up and down like a madman risking a lot of injury and putting a ton of wear and tear on your knees. If you a scrub like Mclung it's prob ok but if you are a bonafide NBA player it's dumb AF wearing out your knees and joints and possibly shortening your career just for the dunk contest. That's prob why these players haven't practiced a lot their agents and team coaches yelled at them when they started to spend a couple weeks doing nothing but dunking.
What if they did the dunk contest as part of the various games? Ie: have the judges sit courtside in the rising stars and ASG, and have them vote on each in game dunk. Highest rated dunk gets the trophy More incentive for the all-stars to attack the rim with show time dunks. And still gives the fringe guys a chance through the rising stars format
im ok with a layup contest. i think there is a lot of creativity with layups. plus they can include the girls from wnba
The dunk contest problem has been the same for a while, everything has been done. So you end up with dunks everybody has seen multiple times, some gimmick laden nonsense, and/or a whole bunch of missed dunks.
The second one is the greatest layup of all-time. Ball fakes make the defense anticipate wrong... then the hangtime and grace.
I think we all need to make peace with the fact that we've largely seen everything that can be done. Toppin's first dunk would've blown all of our minds 20 years ago and it barely registered now. There's only so much the human body can do within the parameters of dunking.
This is about the Footlocker dunk contest in the 80/90s -- I forgot about Mike Conley (long jumper) taking off a foot behind the free throw line.
Maybe they could change it to a comedy thing: judges rate the most hilarious missed dunk. Then I would have truly missed my calling.
NBA announcers and studio talkers and daytime talking heads all get judged by NBA players. Put the rims at 8', let them shoot 3's from the HS line with the women's ball, whatever it takes. Whole all star weekend, all events/games. It'd actually watch that.
