The funny thing about the "logcabin republicans" is that people feel the need to hold up the few openly gay republicans probably because the rest of the party is so vehemently and abjectly opposed to their existence, civil rights etc.

Contrast that other "WTF?" groups like the Mormon Democratic Congressional Congress that get very little press, outside of a 5 year old Salt Lake City newspaper article.

This might be the most confusing broken promise of all time. Obama is apparently channeling is inner Leopold, blithely repeating pledges and promises and philanthropic ideals while the actual dealings are blindingly pro-DADT.

So he campaigns to repeal it - he even re-emphasizes it in his first state of the union.
Refuses to use an executive order, instead passing the buck to congress, despite knowing full well that congress is partisan like never before.
Congress, of course, fails - one wonders if Obama even tried to push it through?
The freeking log cabin republicans work via the courts to get it stopped.
Obama's DOJ fights to keep it intact.
Obama re-pledges via Gibbs that DADT will end, as the judge denies the DOJ's request for an emergency stay.
Gibbs re-emphasizes this pledge two days ago.
Obama's DOJ appeals the ruling today.

WTF Obama? You fail. Hit the google - it's mindboggling - search for Obama DADT and half of the articles are Obama's pledges to undo it and half are about how his administration is fighting to keep it intact.

    They are not.

Obama broke his promise (repeatedly, if you ask me). Plain and simple.

I hope everybody who was proud of Obama's "stance" in this regard is suitably disgusted.

Yes, he refused and opted instead to leave it in the hands of congress. Which was, of course, dumb.

The Obama Admin. is politically obligated to appeal it but as Sam noted it is a pretty weak appeal. In regard to repealing it by Executive order isn't this an act of Congress?

Why is obama obligated to do anything? The courts have enacted social change for example brown vs board.

We can put "Politically Obligated" on the Obama presidency's tombstone. What a load of bull****.

As Commander-In-Chief Obama can effectively tell the Pentagon to ignore it.

Considering we are at war with an election coming up that very well may cost the Democrats both houses I don't think politically obligated is a load of bull****.

You may be right but that seems like that would cause a Constitutional crisis if the executive just ignored Congress.

True and given how much effort they are putting into the appeals I don't think the Admin. will be very upset if this is reversed.

The Admin. is obligated to appeal to try to appease those in the military who still support DADT. As I noted to Rhad we are still at war and the Admin has enough headaches to worry about than uproar in the ranks and another issue for the Republicans to throw out.

Sure you can disagree but you aren't the one dealing with the political consequences or trying to prosecute a war.

Do you mind if I ask you. If Obama came right out and reversed DADT by Executive order do you think that would change Obama and the Democrats political fortunes for the better or worse?

I get the idea that the administration might have a headache and some hassle if they repeal it.

To f***ing bad. Equal rights is worth a little grief from a few of the military brass who are too stuck in the past.

To rely on this Senate, not to mention the Senate after midterms to get something like the repeal of DADT done is being naive.
