Report: Zarqawi captured on Syrian-Iraq border

Reports in Kuwait on Friday said a man assumed to be Al Qaeda leader in Iraq, Abu Musab Zarqawi has been captured near the Syrian border.

The report claimed that the man was captured during a joint operation by U.S. occupation forces and Iraqi police, Al Siyasah newspaper, quoting Iraqi sources, said Friday.

It also said that the suspect was caught in a white shirt and jeans, and he gave no resistance when he realized his hideout was besieged, according to Iraqi police.

The U.S. and Iraqi investigators are trying to identify the captive and has sent his DNA sample for testing, the unconfirmed report indicated.

Zarqawi is the most wanted suspect in Iraq and has a U.S. bounty of $25 million on his head.

Take this for what it is worth. I could not find it on cnn, fox, or msnbc.

U.S. denies reports of Zarqawi capture

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - The U.S. military has denied reports that Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the Jordanian militant who Washington says is allied to Osama bin Laden and al Qaeda, has been captured in Iraq.

"It's not true, the reports are not true," Brigadier General Mark Kimmitt, deputy director of operations for the U.S. military in Iraq, told Reuters on Monday. "We've heard the reports about it, but they are not true."

Earlier, reports on a U.S.-funded Iraqi radio station had suggested Zarqawi had been captured near the town of Hilla, 100 km (60 miles) south of Baghdad, in an area controlled by Polish troops. Iraqi officials in Hilla said a man had been captured who resembled Zarqawi and spoke with a similar accent.

But Polish forces said the man was not Zarqawi.

"The detained man looked like al-Zarqawi but it was not him," a military source in the Polish-led multinational force headquarters in Babylon told Reuters.

Zarqawi is accused of organising or carrying out dozens of deadly attacks in Iraq over the past several months, including a series of blasts and attacks last week that killed more than 100 Iraqis and three U.S. soldiers.

His group has also beheaded a U.S. and a South Korean hostage in Iraq, and is threatening to execute three Turks.
