I was looking on ESPN and there were some talking heads saying how "(Ray Rice) is one of the highest character people in that organization". Talk about damning with faint praise.
Do they not give a rats ass, or are there limits on what can be done? These are grown men living their own lives outside of their job. What is their employer supposed to do?
Well to be fair, most employers would fire employees for DUI's, domestic violence arrests, failed drug tests and things of that nature.
Most employers don't have $20 million invested in an annual all-pro RB/NFL player, not too easy to replace. Most jobs you can replace a person fairly easy, it hurts sometimes, but it's not costing a company millions.

The NFL certainly can take a harder line if they want to with harsher suspensions and expulsion from the league. Can an individual owner do something? Robert Kraft has, but I agree it is harder.... but the NFL certainly can. The larger issue to me is that, especially with the NFL, fans just really do not seem to care. There is a lot of ugliness in the NFL with injuries, non guaranteed contracts, concussions and personal issues the players have away from the game and it almost has to be somewhat a reflection of the culture of football.
It would have to be a change from the NFL offices... it is not realistic to expect an individual team to do it.
Might be talking to the wrong crowd I recall a lot of Folx around here celebrated ole girl getting upper cut on that bus Rocket River
The NFL has taken a harder line since Goodell came into office. The examples you mentioned are certainly not welcome back in the NFL (though they are all either retired, in jail, or dead). But they also do have a Player's Union that they have to work with that will limit just how far they can go. Agree completely with this part.
You cannot just replace a player, especialy a solid starter/quality star, like that ... that's one problem. Why would you ban a player from the NFL after the serve jail-time...I know its hard for people to swallow, but you do not necessarily get banned from an industry for misconduct, maybe a company. Companies do hire felons, especially if they are talented ... it also hurts that people are actually going to be paying for or claimor to see player on the field. I honestly do not know what would warrant a lifetime ban in footbal ... drugs...domestic violence...illegal interstate commerce (operating a dog-fighting)...or being gay (Kerry Rhodes) or even a type of activist (Chris Kluwe; Tim Tebow). You couldn't just boot Rice out of the league, given there are players who have committed numerous of crimes and haven't been kicked out of the league.
but but but Michael Sam not NFL lockerroom material. what a joke. add this to the list of John Stewarts rant.
There is no evidence that Ray Rice hit his fiancee. She could have tripped, fallen, hit her head and passed out while attempting to press the elevator button. I'm not so quick to judge without the facts.
The reporting is still not very good, if they report it in a way that makes it seem like she's out in the elevator because he hit her.
