I live inner-loop in a pretty nice neighborhood (Timbergrove, just west of the Heights). I send my kid to private shool, 'cause HISD sucks.

The future is already here in biodiesel and LNG. In Hong Kong, all cabs run on LNG in fact, which helps cut down on pollution.

I saw they started a Willie Nelson brand bio-deisel company in LA. I think they said it would be 25 years before they reach any critical mass. My question about bio and ehtanol is, is it really energy efficient? Are farmers using as much energy to farm, irrigate and fertilize their crops as they yield in usable fuel What is the BTU in for the BTU out budget?

(I believe it is still negative at this point)

Not sure about the semantics WRT biodiesel, but I know that the liquid natural gas works pretty well and is abundant.

LOL...the cabs in Hong Kong run on LPG, not LNG. LPG is liquified petroleum gas. LNG is liquified natural gas. LPG is a mixture of propane and butane, usually.

There should be a basic knowledge of the energy industry required for people from Houston.

Have you been to Austin lately, and kept up with the news? 6-8 high-rise towers (one is 42 or 44 stories... huge by Austin standards) have been announced recently, within the last few months. That doesn't include the several completed the last couple of years, or under construction. Why? Because Austin has a vibrant downtown area, people want to live in it, and enjoy it, and they are sick and tired of the commute. We would buy a two bedroom condo in one ourselves, except that we have kids and a dog. For the space we'd need, the cost would be too great. When the kids are out of the house? We'll be living in one, if we haven't snapped up a central Austin house already, which are going through the roof. (a nod to Trader_J... man, central Austin housing is skyrocketing!)

Houston can change. It would help if it finally passed zoning laws.

Austin? Vibrant downtown? What are you talking about? Just the bars on 4-6th streets? Austin's downtown is freaking tiny

I have used the train system in Chicago. The soil there is very similar to that in Houston. Why don't we just elevate it and avoid the problems inherent in a street level rail system?

Holy crap!! First heypartner, late last night here, and now the esteemed mrpaige returns! Totally outstanding. You've been missed, sir, being one of the only people around here with an interest in, and damned good knowledge of, Texas politics.

Hope you stick around. Seriously. How have you been?
