Is it possible to get a count of all the money donated to campaigns thus far. I mean all campaigns for this November election, local, state, and federal, democrat, republican, independent, libertarian, etc. I am interested to see if that money collectively would be enough to turn our budget issues around. If everyone donated to the government instead of a campaign, and campaigns were even (given X amt for each party) I wonder if this would help at all?

Obviously, it's unrealistic, it's just a hypothetical question. If everyone all the money donated to candidates was donated to a single fund, and that single fund was divied up to give everyone equal financial resources to run for office, and then the left over was put towards the budget, would this help at all?

Also, I wonder if there are any studies on the economic impact of campaigns. Millions of dollars are being spent, but I have a feeling only the tv networks make any money.

The presidential campaigns are estimated to total close to $1 billion each. All the other campaigns would probably get nowhere close to that combined, so you're looking at something between 2 to 3 billion, most likely.

Maybe the republicans can get a new amendment passed between now and November that will limit the Presidency to a single term. Based on the OP, it sure seems that they have lost hope of winning the election (at least without some dirty tricks)...
