I'm genuinely sorry about this. I'd be happy to start an alternative thread or to help you start one, as this topic is intersting to me, and I don't know enough about some of the engineering nuances on the hardware side of things/some of the advances in energy sources based on the fundamental sciences. I just don't think it's really possible to have a good discussion here tbh, it was poisoned a certain way right off the bat, sorry if I was a part of that.

I have never understood the point of these type of government shenanigans. France gets 80% of its electricity from non-hydrocarbon sources.

The US gets 80% of its electricity from hydrocarbon sources. France's electricity production is dominated by nuclear energy. US's electricity production is dominated by coal and gas.

The odd part is that 40% of US coal is mined on federal government land. We have a president who's big green-energy plan was "clean coal", and now he is going back to this conference?

Why waste tax payer money on this kind of stuff? Is Paris still a tourist hotspot during the winter?

Nice post. It's purely a political farce and Obama is trying to credit.

No Turkey for You Thanks to Obama’s Costly Power Plan

Next Thanksgiving it could cost a lot more to cook the turkey, heat your home and keep the lights on.

Why? Because every single one of the Lower 48 states will see electricity prices increase thanks to the president’s costly power plan. In fact, according to analysis by NERA Economic Consulting, 28 states will see peak-year increases of at least 20 percent and 14 will see peak-year price increases of at least 30 percent. For 59 million low- and middle-income Americans, higher electricity prices will mean making tough choices about how to balance already tight budgets. This is but one of many reasons why 27 states, 24 trade associations and a plethora of major companies and cooperatives are suing to stop this illegal plan from being implemented. Joining them in opposition is a majority of both chambers of Congress which are once again standing their ground and telling Obama to table his power scheme.

This Thanksgiving, we are grateful for all that we have and are especially thankful for all the many voices fighting to ensure access to reliable, affordable coal-based electricity now and for decades to come.

Some potentially innovative solutions to global warming. These need to be further enhanced, but a promising base from which to work off of. Sadly this isn't on the agenda of the Paris crowd.

    http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2015-11-30/how-to-slow-climate-change-with-a-fake-volcano

There’s a cheap, quick, dirty, and controversial way to combat global warming that isn’t on the agenda of the United Nations climate summit in Paris, which runs from Nov. 30 to Dec. 11. It involves replicating the planet-cooling effect of a volcanic eruption. When Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines blew in 1991, its emissions briefly reversed most of the global warming that had occurred since the start of the Industrial Revolution. The idea is to mimic Pinatubo by using a fleet of modified business jets to inject fine droplets of sulfuric acid into the stratosphere, where they would combine with water vapor to form fine sulfate particles that reflect sunlight away from the earth.

Scientists estimate that a few grams of sulfate would be enough to counteract the warming effect of a ton of carbon dioxide. The cost of this planetary protection? Perhaps 0.01 percent of the annual world gross domestic product. In other words, almost nothing. The cost of stopping the entire planet from warming would be not much more per decade than the $6 billion the Italian government is spending to protect one city, Venice, from rising sea levels. That’s the calculation of a leading figure in the debate over so-called geoengineering, David Keith, a professor of applied physics at Harvard and of public policy at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government.

I am actually pro-geo-engineering. Not gonna lie. I actually like that post from big-carbon-taxxx.

I mean, we're ****ing with the atmosphere in a big way already, and there's no way we can slow the use of carbon fast enough, so geo-engineering has to be on the table.

Why can't we just have a more creative process to addressing people's climate change concerns, like giving them the option to purchase energy from a non-hydrocarbon source?

Pass a law that states, upon entering a retail energy contract, the provider must state the portion of energy it delivers which comes from gas, coal, nuclear, solar, wind, and other sources. Then give customers the ability to amend those percentages. Maybe they want more solar and wind, so they voluntarily chose to accept those costs.

That's the problem with these conferences: when all you have is a hammer, every problem looks like a nail.

Fracking was an odd defense in the context of a climate change summit. Gov't support of cheaper oil production doesn't seem consistent with what they're trying to achieve.

    yes and no

it is lower in emissions than oil based energy though the effect of non-burning loss is probably higher than we think

As a bridge gas is 'better' but it delays the switch to renewables when people propose it as a solution.

    true!

Yet at the same time, fracking tech is keeping oil prices low and may lead to the US being the world's number one oil producer. Good for the economy and security, perhaps, but no so much a bragging point at a climate summit.

So....a bit of a bizarre defense by NS.

Does anybody really think renewables will ever be able to provide 100% of our energy?

Have you ever looked up during the day and seen that giant fusion reactor we have at the center of our solar system?

The sun produces something like 30,000 times the amount of energy we need today, continuously.

So, the answer is an unequivocally 'yes.'
