If I had a kid, I'd consider taking them out of school too. The only remotely political event that I ever watched when I was in school was coverage of 9/11...and even that was voluntary.
it's a public school this is our president kids recite a pledge of allegiance everyday still there are pictures up of presidents in public buildings, typically he's addressing kids on staying in school and working hard objecting to having your kids see the president address them about working hard and staying in school while they attend a public school is quite possibly among the dumbest things i've ever heard of. i would strongly suggest that these folks move to another country. the sooner the better, really. of course, just a few years back i'm sure these folks had bumper stickers on their cars that said "these colors don't run." apparently they do if the color of the president is different. yeah, this crap pisses me off.
wonder if he is going to recomment that they eat their greens, look both ways before crossing the road and wash their hands as well...
For bad or good, the parent should have say to what there kid is exposed to, even if it is a seemingly benign "do good in school" message from our overlord. I mean president. If I had a kid, I wouldn't even bother with school. I would teach them; reading, writing, basic calculus, physics, and engineering, have them memorize wilderness survival handbooks and army field manuals, teach them the 99 ways to kill a man, then ship them off to new mexico to build one of those earth ship house things. When they returned from there training I would then let them choose there own name. This would all be done by age 9.

It's never too early for children to start forming their own opinions. ...especially when their parents are dumbasses.
I'd like to know what teachers are planning to do with this speach. If you are in a public school then part of what you should be learning is about civic life. Having an opportunity to hear the president and discuss what he had to say seems like a great idea. I could see some teachers presenting this in a way that feel to some parents as if it is indoctrination of something they don't agree with. But you need to prepare your kids for the world they will live in which includes many people you might disagree with. And it is inevitable that your children will have teachers tell them something you disagree with. These parents really should let their kids go to school, hear the speach, observe the way it is presented, discuss it with their peers and discuss it with their parents when they get home. I think parents are too hands-off in these matters and rather than spend a little time teaching their kids what they believe they want schools to teach them what they believe.
For this being a Texas board, it's refreshing to see that most posters appear to be rather sane in their political leanings. Respek.

It's really sad that parents would rob their kid of the experience of seeing a POTUS speak live and sets dangerous precedents. I would send my kids to watch Bush speak, even Cheney. YOu don't get those experiences often in an intimate setting. Obama is the president, the office is greater than the man. He's the leader of our country, if you pull your kid from that, you are teaching them a dangerous lesson - that you don't have to respect authority or leaders if you don't agree with them. It's the parents who are indoctrinating their kids into politics with this effort.
