I thought everyone wanted us to NOT sign these types of players...to commit to trying out younger guys.
Not the Mike Hampton/Russ Ortiz types but Jon Garland/Randy Wolf types are ok in my book as it gives us a solid rotation and it won't break the bank. Still don't trust Paulino to be a #3 or 4 but a #5 would be ok for now.
Tags on his twitter confirmed Val, Miggy and Hawk are all Type A free agents and if we sign a type A free agent our top pick is protected.
really?? hampton and ortiz were low risk because they didn't cost much. they don't keep you from doing other things. locking up garland is a pretty big investment. it doesn't seem like the kind of move we'd want made if we were pressing for rebuilding.
Well, I won't believe rebuilding till I see it and if we are not rebuilding then I want pitching, pitching and more pitching. Don't want to lock up Garland or Wolf, I want 1-2 year deals with options much like what Wolf got this past offseason. I doubt either is looking at anything over 5-6 million and to me thats the kinda move we need to build a solid rotation so we can atleast compete. Pitching and Defense Wins...
http://mlb.fanhouse.com/2009/11/09/free-agent-compensation-rankings-released/ MLB Free-Agent Compensation 'Elias Rankings' Released If a team signs a Type A free agent, its first-round pick goes to the former team -- unless that pick is in the top 15, in which case a second-round pick goes to the former team. The former team also gets an extra pick between the first and second rounds. According to McTaggart... Expect the Astros pay roll to shrink in 2010. So dont expect any significant free agent signings http://brianmctaggart.mlblogs.com/
No doubt, MMP is going to be a snore fest, you reap what you sow I guess. I just hope it doesn't get so bad we are on the same track as the Pirates and Nationals.
I wasn't expecting them to sign Lacky or anyone in his territory but if they are going to SLASH payroll then just trade off what you can don't torture us. If its just a minor reduction and they can still can sign a nice semi- healthy vetern pitcher for 1 yr 5-6 million to go with OZ and Wandy ill be cool with it.
I thought this is what everyone wanted...these threads have been littered with post after post complaining about him spending money foolishly on free agents and not investing that money into building a farm system.
Shouldn't you maybe wait until at least spring training before declaring "fail"? What if the payroll shrinks because they manage to trade away Lee's contract for good prospects?
When Uncle D stops going through the garbage heaps, and actually wants to win, let me know.....I'll be waiting for a while
(kicking myself for wasting this time...) Randy Johnson Jeff Kent Carlos Lee Roger Clemens Andy Pettitte Carlos Beltran Michael Bourn Jose Valverde ...not to mention the guys they *tried* to bring in and couldn't. yeah, keep kidding yourself. Newsflash: *EVERY* franchise mixes in some old guys trying to catch lightning in a bottle. To pretend that that is all the Astros ever do or that the Astros are the only team to do so is myopic and stupid.
That's not quite accurate... *EVERY* franchise mixes in some old guys for various reasons--to catch lightning in a bottle, for depth at various positions, or because simply nothing else was available.
My recommendation is: Spoiler This message is hidden because djohn2oo8 is on your ignore list. I wish stupidity was grounds for banning. Why the hell a guy that hates the Astros keeps posting in here is beyond me.
