I know we don't know a lot of the players who will get drafted but the the draft is tomorrow. Some local notable players include Jay Bruce(West Brook HS, Beaumont, Texas), Lance Broadway(TCU), Mark McCormick(Baylor), Koby Clemens(Memorial HS), Cliff Pennington(A&M), Wade Townsend(Rice), Taylor Teagarden(Texas). John Lopez of the Houston Chronicle thinks Astros will select Koby Clemens as a CATCHER. Astros have 5 picks in first 3 rounds. Last years draft was good for the Astros in which they got studs like Hunter Pence and Troy Patton. I think you can watch the draft on MLB.COM or listen to it on MLB.COM radio.

A lot of people are saying the Astros are really interest in righthander Jacob Marceaux of McNeese State and they think they will take him with their first pick. Astros need postion players more than pitchers.

WHy do they have the draft this time of the year?

I was wondering why the Chron had an article on the next draft....like they gave up on this season or something!

I graduated from Memorial High School in the same class as Koby Clemens. I talked with a lot of the people on the baseball team and they say although he is phenomenal in hitting, he is not even close to being good enough to start for the University of Texas baseball team. Just something to think about.

    I'll be watching...

Been in classes etc with quite a few people that should be drafted pretty high..

Rooting like crazy for one guy that I'm friends with who is expected to be drafted.. but probably not too high (maybe higher next year)..

Hopefully I'll be able to call him in the next couple of days to congratulate him on being drafted (crossing my fingers that he is drafted)..

    Thanks Phi...

Just goes to show what a crapshoot the baseball draft is. You never can tell what will happen to a player once they hit the minors. The Astros have been relatively good, especially in the lower rounds (Wade Miller round 20, Roy Oswalt round 23, Todd Self round 15, Jared Gothreaux round 16).

This should be a good draft with having 5 picks in the first 3 rounds. I would like to see them take Taylor Teagarden from UT. He's a good catcher. The pitchers love his defense and he can hit.

Well, college and high school just let out, so drafting and signing the players is better than letting them sit around for 10 months doing nothing.

I've always wondered how many rounds the draft is.

Oh yeah, that makes sense. Just seems odd to have the draft in the middle of the season. But since schools are out, ...yeah.

The Reds take another local kid in Jay Bruce from Beaumont. They have like 10 players from this area.

With the 24 pick, the Astros select Brian Bogusevic, of-lhp, Tulane U. He pitched complete game four-hitter, striking out 10 as Tulane clinched Conference USA regular season title. Similar to Mark Mulder. Good delivery and mechanics. FB has late sink. Slider is out pitch. Circle change has deception and movement.

We just took Ralph Henriquez, a high school catcher from Florida at 72. According to mlb.tv, we passed up on Taylor Teagarden beacuse he's represented by Boras.

I'm looking to see where my friend from Magnolia goes. Ryan Mitchell is the name. It should be a later round, as he was picked as the 65th best high school prospect.

Astros draft Tulane's LHP Brian Bogusevic
Arizona takes SS Upton with draft's top pick

The Astros picked left-handed pitcher Brian Bogusevic (Tulane) at the no. 24 spot, Houston's top choice, in today's MLB Draft.

Houston took Tennessee outfielder Eli Iorg with the no. 38 choice and catcher Ralph Henriquez out of Key West High School, Fla., with the 72nd overall pick. Houston's next pick is in the third round in the 89th spot.

Former Rice pitcher Wade Townsend was taken at the no. 8 spot by Tampa Bay. Townsend was drafted last year by Baltimore -- also with the eighth pick -- but turned down an offer from the Orioles, returned to school, renounced his college eligibility to continue contract negotiations. Baltimore lost its rights to Townsend once he attended classes.

Justin Upton, a slugging high school shortstop from Virginia, was taken by the Arizona Diamondbacks with the No. 1 pick. Upton and his brother B.J., the second pick in 2002 by Tampa Bay, are the highest-drafted siblings in draft history. The younger Upton was generally considered the best all-around athlete in this year's draft.

The 6-foot-1, 195-pound Upton was mainly a shortstop at Great Bridge High School in Chesapeake, Va., but also played third base and could move to the outfield in the pros. He has great power potential, solid defensive skills and is speedy on the bases.

Arizona picked No. 1 overall for the first time. The Diamondbacks' previous highest selection was No. 4 in 1999, when they took another high school shortstop, Corey Myers.

With the second pick, Kansas City selected Nebraska third baseman Alex Gordon. Undrafted out of high school, the two-time Big 12 player of year and Golden Spikes Award finalist is hitting .382 with 18 home runs and 68 RBIs for the Huskers.

Southern California catcher Jeff Clement went No. 3 to Seattle. Highly touted since he set the national high school career home run record, Clement has become an all-around hitter and solid defensive catcher.

Washington took University of Virginia third baseman Ryan Zimmerman with the fourth pick. Zimmerman, who set a Team USA record with a .468 batting average last summer, is also a tremendous defensive player who's been described as a future Gold Glover.

Miami third baseman Ryan Braun was selected fifth by Milwaukee. The offensive leader of the Hurricanes is batting .396 with 18 homers and 75 RBIs. Toronto took Cal State Fullerton left-hander Ricky Romero with the sixth pick. The Big West pitcher of the year is 12-5 with a 2.95 ERA for the defending College World Series champions.

Long Beach State's Troy Tulowitzki went seventh to Colorado. The successor to AL Rookie of the Year Bobby Crosby at shortstop for the 49ers is considered an even better all-around athlete.

    Tampa Bay then took Townsend.

The New York Mets selected hard-throwing righty Mike Pelfrey of Wichita State with the ninth pick. The 6-foot-7 Pelfrey is a two-time Missouri Valley Conference pitcher of the year.

With the 10th pick, Detroit took North Carolina high school outfielder Cameron Maybin.

Florida high school outfielder Andrew McCutchen went next to Pittsburgh, followed by Texas high school outfielder Jay Bruce to Cincinnati. Baltimore chose Virginia high school catcher Brandon Snyder; Cleveland selected Arizona outfielder Trevor Crowe; and the Chicago White Sox picked Texas Christian right-hander Lance Broadway with the 15th selection.

This year — the draft's 40th anniversary — marks the first time the selection order is based on the previous year's record from worst to best, regardless of league. In past years, the picks alternated between leagues.

The draft lasts 50 rounds and is conducted through Wednesday by conference call. San Diego selected California high school shortstop Matt Bush with the first pick last year.

The Astros? Employing an "Anti-Boras Philosophy"? I didn't see that one coming.
