    The day the music died.

Well I know he was talking about Buddy Holly but I think it's apropos

John F. Kennedy was assassinated this day in Dallas. I'm surprised there hasn't been any mention of this.

Not that I know of. Just read a story about how it's not really being mentioned that much this year.

I met a girl who sang the blues
And I asked her for some happy news,
But she just smiled and turned away.
I went down to the sacred store
Where I’d heard the music years before,
But the man there said the music wouldn’t play.

And in the streets: the children screamed,
The lovers cried, and the poets dreamed.
    But not a word was spoken;
The church bells all were broken.
And the three men I admire most:
The father, son, and the holy ghost,
They caught the last train for the coast
    The day the music died.

    This here Anakin guy
    Maybe Vader someday later
Now he's just a small fry
    Well he left his hime
    And kissed his mommy goodbye
Sayin' "Soon I'm gonna be a Jedi
Soon I'm gonna be a Jedi"

I dreamed I was the president of these United States
I dreamed I replaced ignorance, stupidity and hate
I dreamed the perfect union and a perfect law, undenied
And most of all I dreamed I forgot the day John Kennedy died

I dreamed that I could do the job, that others hadn't done
I dreamed that I was uncorrupt and fair to everyone
I dreamed I wasn't gross or base, a criminal on the take
And most of all I dreamed I forgot the day John Kennedy died

Oh the day John Kennedy died ...

I remember where I was that day, I was upstate in a bar
The team from the university was playing football on TV
Then the screen want dead and the announcer said:
    ' There's been a tragedy
There's are unconfirmed reports the president's been shot
And he may be dead or dying.'
Talking stopped, someone shouted: ' What?! '
I ran out to the street
    People were gathered everywhere saying:
' Did you hear what they said on TV? '
And then a guy in a Porsche with his radio
Hit his born and told us the news
He said: ' The president's dead, he was shot twice in the head
In Dallas, and they don't know by whom. '
I dreamed I was the president of these United States
I dreamed I was young and smart and it was not a waste
I dreamed that there was a point to life and to the human race
I dreamed that I could somehow comprehend that someone
    Shot him in the face

Oh the day John Kennedy died ...

I was just about to say that. It's very surreal. You can stand on the part of the statue that Zapruder filmed from. You can stand behind the infamous picket fence. You can get within a few feet of the 'snipers nest' which is still set up and blocked off.

I could spend all day there.

He was a friend of mine
He was a friend of mine
His killing has no purpose, no reason or rhyme
He was a friend of mine

    He was in Dallas town
    He was in Dallas town
From a sixth floor window a gunner shot him down
    He died in Dallas town

    He never knew my name
    He never knew my name
Though I never met him, I knew him just the same
Oh he was a friend of mine

The leader of a nation for such a precious time
Oh he was a friend of mine

Bill Hicks does a bit about this where he says it's totally authentic because if you look at the window where the shooter was supposed to be there's no one there.

but the view is definitely surreal. very creepy.

and you can stand behind the fence right there over the grassy knoll, as well. all sorts of interesting grafitti there about the assasination.

I was in the 4th grade. They dismissed us early-- hadn't done that since the Cuban Missile Crisis. Got home and my mother was sitting there watching the TV news crying. Yeah, it made an impression.

i like the bit about why they wont let the public up to the window that oswald shot from because every single one of us would stand there and say "theres no f***ing way!!!)

personally, i think it was a mob hit.

I never really thought much about the JFK assassination. But, about 2 months ago, I went to Dallas on business and visited the site on some free time. Then, I became obsessed for a couple of days, reading all about it. There's something about the feeling of history that stands there. I had a similar feeling when I visited Grant's tomb. What you know from history suddenly isn't abstract anymore.

I saw him the day before he was shot, when his motorcade came down Broadway from Hobby Airport. I couldn't have been over 30 feet from him, Jackie, the Governor, LBJ and the rest. They rode in open convertibles. It was the day before the end of an era in America, a literal sea-change. I was lucky enough to have had my Mom take me out of school to see his, "We are going to put a man on the Moon by the end of this decade, and return him to Earth," speech at Rice Stadium.

The man was the living definition of charisma. Seeing him give that speech in person made the hairs stand up on the back of my neck. He had those thousands of people in the palm of his hand, and we all cheered like lunatics. The films and choppy videos you see today do absolutely no justice to the man.

I hope he rests in peace. I have my doubts.

I believe President Bush will make a speech about this later today. Followed by an invasion of Cuba, and probably Venezuela too just to be safe.

well, it's only fitting to invade Cuba on the anniversary of JFK's death.
