I was just about to say that. It's very surreal. You can stand on the part of the statue that Zapruder filmed from. You can stand behind the infamous picket fence. You can get within a few feet of the 'snipers nest' which is still set up and blocked off. I could spend all day there.

that's funny! but the view is definitely surreal. very creepy. and you can stand behind the fence right there over the grassy knoll, as well. all sorts of interesting grafitti there about the assasination.
I was in the 4th grade. They dismissed us early-- hadn't done that since the Cuban Missile Crisis. Got home and my mother was sitting there watching the TV news crying. Yeah, it made an impression.

I never really thought much about the JFK assassination. But, about 2 months ago, I went to Dallas on business and visited the site on some free time. Then, I became obsessed for a couple of days, reading all about it. There's something about the feeling of history that stands there. I had a similar feeling when I visited Grant's tomb. What you know from history suddenly isn't abstract anymore.
I saw him the day before he was shot, when his motorcade came down Broadway from Hobby Airport. I couldn't have been over 30 feet from him, Jackie, the Governor, LBJ and the rest. They rode in open convertibles. It was the day before the end of an era in America, a literal sea-change. I was lucky enough to have had my Mom take me out of school to see his, "We are going to put a man on the Moon by the end of this decade, and return him to Earth," speech at Rice Stadium. The man was the living definition of charisma. Seeing him give that speech in person made the hairs stand up on the back of my neck. He had those thousands of people in the palm of his hand, and we all cheered like lunatics. The films and choppy videos you see today do absolutely no justice to the man. I hope he rests in peace. I believe President Bush will make a speech about this later today. Followed by an invasion of Cuba, and probably Venezuela too just to be safe.
