Lets just take this statement as fact for a second. 7000 people = just another day at the border. 7000*365 = 2,555,000 per year. That number doesn't concern you?
Do you realize what would happen if that caravan was allowed into the U.S.? Nothing. Almost everyone on this message board would never ever encounter one of the caravan members. You would have about the same shot of coming into contact with someone from the caravan as you have of winning the lotto. Don't allow people to enter illegally. If they are seeking sanctuary allow them in based on a case by case basis.
I think most people, even Republicans, agree with letting asylum seekers in on a case by case basis. I think the problem with the caravan is it encourages people who are unlikely to meet the bar for asylum into joining the group. This creates a huge problem for officials at the border, and it also makes delays for migrants with legitimate asylum cases even worse than it already is.
I think you are taking that too literal to make a hyperbolic point. 7000 people entering every day for a year isn't something that normally happens. Probably hasn't ever happened in modern America.
This. As a moderate Dem, building detainment centers to house and sort these people is prudent. Being cruel and separating families to teach them a lesson and to discourage this (hey look, it didn't) isn't prudent.
I read of all the goofy conspiracy theories of this caravan, but do we really know how it all got started? And how are they able to walk freakin 1000 miles (cue the Proclaimers song) unassisted? Food, water, bathrooms (cue Forrest Gump). I work on the Texas/Mexico border a TON and they're coming at a good time...when it's hot out here there's anywhere between a couple to a dozen guys that don't make it just trying to cross from Mexico and die from heat exhaustion per week. Some kids are stranded by guys they come over with bc they can't keep up...just sad. Honestly I can't wait to see how this whole situation turns out.
I think Republicans should own up to having a hand in creating this caravan - probably offered anyone $1,000 to march up to the border just in time for the election to win some votes
Who knows how these things get started. But they say it's leaderless unlike the previous one that upset Trump so much. Reality is that they aren't going to make it to the US. They have 1,000 miles to go and half have already dropped out. Unless they get support via rail or bus, they won't make it. And let's be real, 3,000 people arriving at the US border is nothing compared to what they get everyday.
Seeking asylum doesn't mean you are forced to seek asylum at the closest location. Choice isn't taken away from a victim because they are seeking asylum. They can seek asylum where they wish.
No one said they were forced to, but why wouldn't they? Since they are out of their country, they are free from the danger there, it would seem like they could seek asylum right where they are.....unless they are actually economic migrants instead of legitimate asylum seekers.
So then they aren't really seeking asylum, they are seeking immigration into the US for economic reasons.
Are you really that simple? They can seek asylum in the situation that will provide them with the best economic hope as well. That doesn't mean they aren't seeking asylum.
