Nintendo Wii (previously codenamed: Revolution)

Yeah RE4 was a great game but I've had every Nintendo console up to this point and since N64 I've just gotten more and more disillusioned with each console. Finally I got an X-Box and play that way more than I did my Gamecube. I gave that to my 8 year old nephew and he loves it.

 

Don't like the name.

Of course, if it wasn't obvious before, they are clearly going with the Apple approach, broad market, wide range, household name type of stuff. The site itself looks like something right out of Apple's playbook.

Who knows. At least they got it out of the way before E3.

 

Good point. I can only imagine what E3 would have been like if Nintendo tried to show off the system after announcing the name to the public. Announcing it beforehand was a smart move IMO.

Of course, picking a better name would have been an even smarter move.

 

I agree, RC. I think what they are trying to do is set themselves firmly in the mainstream consciousness. I wish they could have found a better alternative, but it still fits with what they want.

They want instant recognition, to go along with the broad, clean white style that catches the eye. I've seen plenty of people (casual gamers) mix up "Gamestation" "X-cube" "X-station", etc. Chances are you aren't going to mix up 'Wii'. Even if you may be using it to make a 'wee' joke.

I would have tried to find a better word while still not compromising the vision. But who knows, maybe it'll work. Certainly it is already creating buzz, and it won't be forgotten anytime soon.

 

I'm so tired of the ignorant comments that have been made all throughout about Nintendo, and it's so-called "kid" image.

You know who would like waving the controller around? Me, and I'm not a kid. Games are made to have fun, it doesn't matter what the content was. Mario? Some might say it's a kid game, but is it fun? Yes. Was Metroid Prime a kid game? No.

Look at the realm of possibilities with this so-called "kiddies wand", I could shoot someone with accurate precision using the controller like a light gun, I could chop off someone's head using the wand as a sword.

 

Not that I really want to get into this arguement, but FWIW, the Rev...um...Wii appears to have gotten the most interest from Japanese developers and gamers (probably not kids), according to a poll from Famitsu:

I love how people that adore juvenile "mature" drivel like GTA are almost always the first to jump on Nintendo for being too kiddie.

Back on topic, the new name sucks. They could have had an awesome commercial set to that Beatles song.

 

Nintendo has put out plenty of influential "mature" games over the years. Goldeneye, of course, is a classic...

That said, there's not a chance in hell I'll be buying a WiiNES.

 

So what's Wii supposed to mean? Wireless, interactive?

Or maybe they're trying to cash in on pop stars in video games ala 50 cents. Though with the name they've chosen, they're probably streaming for someone with wider mass appeal, someone like that golden guy Ricky Martin.

And yet of the three big makers, Nintendo is the only one that has turned a consistent profit. I think their marketing strategy is pretty clear. They've carved out a niche market of kids that even xbox and ps2 doesn't bother fighting over. Remember when Playstation made those stupid krash bandicoot games to compete with mario. In the end, the Mario franchise is rock solid and guarantees a market for nintendo that is untouchable.

Anything beyond that, (i.e. attracting adults and teenagers) is just icing on the cake. There was a great article comparing profits and sales between the three major companies and its not even close. Nintnedo is easily the most stable and profitable simply because the Nintendo DS still owns the handheld market and unlike the other two companies, Gamecube was always sold at a profit. (Microsoft is still hemorraging money off of the xbox franchise and playstation did for a while as well)

 

Live and Madden are both Nintendo third party games just like any other system.

The problem is with people somehow trying to tack 'kiddy' on a video game. As I've said before, unless it is Pooh's Big Adventure, using 'kiddy' is stupid. A good game is a good game. I've got no problem playing Mario, GTA and Halo all in the same week.

You're playing a video game. It's a little too late to worry about being a 'mature' adult.

 

I've read similar articles. Nintendo's the second most profitable company in Japan under Toyota.

I still don't think the Revolution's a complete system. You need one of the other two...

 

I think that's exactly what they're banking on. With their low price point (likely $200 at the most), they are saying "get your 360 or your PS3 and then pick up our system to round out your gaming experience".

The realize it's a very broad generalization, but the end result (in theory) would be that 360 is in half the people's homes, PS3 in the other half, and Nintendo in all of them.

I think this is what they mean when they say "we aren't competing with Sony and Microsoft". They are...yet they aren't. It's pretty damn smart actually.

The name change, however...that's freaking stupid.
