It doesn't happen much, but some chump who didn't make any effort to do the same to score the spot will show up and ask if he can share the booth. I always say that I'm sorry, but I prefer to eat alone. I do this, which I'm sure some will disagree with, because I've found it impossible to zone out with my book when someone across from me is doing whatever it is they do. I don't want to make polite conversation with a stranger (maybe if it's a hot chick... I can be weak) and I don't want to have to watch the person chomp on his food and/or read his damn newspaper, looking up and smiling at me, which requires the polite smile in return, when I really want to say, "Why did I let you sit here, you lazy jerk??"

To be clear, I don't do this at eateries that are designed for common use of tables. Flame away.
