I found this to be an interesting read and was surprised at the size of the project. Three Takeaways From Samsung’s New Lab In Taylor, Texas
Texas actually has multiple massive investments in chip fabs being built across the state. A lot of companies are either expanding chip manufacturing/design operations or building new facilities. Samsung's investment in the Tyler facility is around $17 billion, but TI is working on one in Sherman, Tx with multiple factories that could end up being over a $30 billion investment. GlobalWafers is also building a $5 billion plant in Sherman. I was joking last year that Sherman has become a hotbed for chips, apparently. lol. One of the reasons they like it up there is the proximity to Lake Texoma. I'm sure property values have gone and will go up. The factories being built in Arizona are massive, too - even costlier than the ones in Texas. Especially that 3nm TSMC fab, but I don't know where that stands right now after it was delayed apparently due to the shortage of skilled workers the last I remember hearing about it. They were supposed to send more people from Taiwan to help speed up with the build. I think that one was over $40 billion.
There was a story a few months ago about the TSMC Lab being built in Arizona. No Water, No Workers, No Chips Companies will eventually wise up and do better when assembling checklists for what is needed when choosing locations for new Labs/Plants.
I think that's paywalled to me, but I did find this article which, sadly, I also cannot read : https://foreignpolicy.com/2023/08/15/tsmc-semiconductors-arizona-taiwan-climate-chips/ The other thing I read was some people saying it wasn't a labor shortage, but a cheap labor shortage. I'm unsure.
