Fat Ho Burgers on 11th street in North Waco was causing a ruckus even before it opened because of its name. Where did the name come from? The restaurant's owner Lakita Evans explained. "Sometimes black people, when they see something they'll say woo that is a big ho, that ho right there is tight," she said. "So it's catchy, like that." The 23-year-old Evans put herself through college and opened the spot with her own money. Her grand opening on Tuesday was a success, at one point she ran out of burgers because so many people came in. "We plan on being open for a long time," Evans said. Not everyone's excited about the name of the newest burger joint in the city. There's a Facebook group created called "Keep Waco Texas Positive" asking Evans to change the name. "It's unfortunate that in our society our culture has ingrained in people, both men and women, that words like ho or skank or other terrible words I can't say on TV are acceptable," Shelley Littleton said. Littleton grew up in Waco and now lives in California, She started the Facebook group and said she wants to help Evans, not protest against her. "She's a young woman with a dream and I want nothing more to make her dream come true, I just want it to be a positive dream," Littleton explained. Evans isn't worried about controversy, she's looking to keep her business going her way. "I'm not ashamed to wear my blessings, and this is my blessing, if you don't like it, so what," she said. Evans has plans to use the burger joint in the summer to help kids in the community.
Even more hilarious is that nearby is the "Gospel Cafe and Bookstore".... they're hoping she changes the name : <object type="application/x-shockwave-flash" id="video" width="334" height="290.5" data="http://www.myfoxdc.com/video/videoplayer.swf?dppversion=8705"><param value="http://www.myfoxdc.com/video/videoplayer.swf?dppversion=8705" name="movie"/><param value="&skin=MP1ExternalAll-MFL.swf&embed=true&adSizeArray=300x240&adSrc=&flv=http%3A%2F%2Fwww%2Emyfoxdc%2Ecom%2Ffeeds%2FoutboundFeed%3FobfType%3DVIDEO%5FPLAYER%5FSMIL%5FFEED%26componentId%3D134633274&img=http%3A%2F%2Fsharing%2Emyfoxdc%2Ecom%2Fsharekdfw%2F%2Fphoto%2F2011%2F03%2F23%2Ffatho%2EDFW%5Fthumbs%5Ftmb0001%5F20110323183301%5F640%5F480%2EJPG&story=http%3A%2F%2Fwww%2Emyfoxdc%2Ecom%2Fdpps%2Fnews%2Foffbeat%2F032311%2D%2527fat%2Dho%2Dburgers%2527%2Dopens%2Din%2Dtexas%5F12455317&category=news&title=fatho%2Ewmv&oacct=foximfoximwttg,foximglobal&ovns=foxinteractivemedia&headline=%27Fat%20Ho%20Burgers%27%20Opens%20in%20Texas" name="FlashVars"/><param value="all" name="allowNetworking"/><param value="always" name="allowScriptAccess"/></object><p style="width:334px"><a href="http://www.myfoxdc.com/dpps/news/offbeat/032311-%27fat-ho-burgers%27-opens-in-texas_12455317">'Fat Ho Burgers' Opens in Texas: MyFoxDC.com</a></p>
Is she Chinese or something? Serious though. It might taste like crap (or not) but she knew people would talk about it, and people would buy it.
