a triple double without taking a shot .... Triple-double earns Lady Tiger C-USA honor McFadyen's feat basketball rarity By Gary Parrish parrish@gomemphis.com Whether it has ever happened before is something we'll probably never know for sure. But either way, Kalara McFadyen's unconventional triple-double in the University of Memphis's 91-56 victory over Charlotte on Sunday was good enough to earn her Conference USA Co-Player of the Week honors. McFadyen and UAB's Michelle Smith were named C-USA Players of the Week on Monday, with McFadyen's honor coming in large part because of her triple-double that included no points or shots against the 49ers. A 5-6 point guard from Auckland, New Zealand, McFadyen finished with 12 assists, 10 rebounds and 10 steals while never throwing the ball at the hoop once. Though it seems improbable that such a box score has been achieved before, there is no way to verify such a thing because the NCAA does not keep statistics on triple-doubles. "It would seem unlikely that someone would have done this before, but there is no way of knowing for sure," said Jim Wright, the NCAA's director of statistics. "It is certainly unusual." But how unusual? Consider that the NBA and WNBA have never had a triple-double recorded without the player taking a shot, and the WNBA has just two triple-doubles in its five-year history. McFadyen, who had 18 assists, 15 steals and 14 rebounds in the U of M's two victories, is the first Lady Tiger to record a triple-double of any sort, and just the fifth in C-USA history. - Gary Parrish: 529-2365 February 5, 2002
